  • Excellent black level and shadow detail
  • Flawless high definition detail thanks to 1:1 mapping option
  • Handles 1080p/24 video signal correctly without telecine judder
  • Primary colours suitably accurate after calibration
  • User-accessible Colour Management System
  • 100hz mode optional and can be enabled/disabled when necessary
  • Optional motion interpolation is relatively natural looking
  • Great scaling of standard definition content
  • Excellent jaggies reduction for video-based sources
  • Film Mode (3:2 and 2:2 cadence detection and compensation)
  • Film Mode also works for 1080i/60 sources
  • Solid connectivity
  • TV swivels on table-top stand

  • No white balance control in user menu for greyscale calibration
  • 100hz MCFI mode can cause artefacts if enabled
  • Lack of full per-input settings
  • [Exact Scan] irritation - 1:1 mapping option sometimes needs re-enabled
  • 30ms input lag not the smallest in the industry - a Game Mode would be a welcome addition
  • Remote control not worthy of the TV's premium feel and performance
  • EPG slightly unresponsive

The Pros and Cons lists above should be a reminder that finding fault with the Toshiba 40ZF355D is relatively difficult. Any criticisms we could find were fairly insignificant given the LCD TV's other strengths.

As a result of its great connectivity, excellent LCD panel, range of picture tweaks, highly competent video processing, and the degree of control it affords the user in configuring its picture, we can safely say that the 40ZF355D is one of the best HDTVs we've reviewed this year. The only other recent displays we've reviewed that can currently match Toshiba's effort are the Sony KDL-40W4000 and Samsung LE40A656, which prospective buyers should also pay close attention to. It's highly likely, though, that Toshiba 40ZF355D's gorgeous Picture Frame design may help people decide.
