China’s Xiaomi is said to be developing its first high-end 8K television for its Mi series TVs. It’s said that the new TV will be second in the company’s TV lineup, behind its flagship transparent OLED TV, the Mi TV Lux that was launched last month.

The rumours were first reported by the popular Weibo account Digital Chat Station via Gizmochina, which said the upcoming Xiaomi 8K TV has the model number L82M6-8K. The TV is said to be 82-inches wide and feature a 7,680 x 4,320 pixel resolution.

Digital Chat said the TV will use a panel supplied by LG Display, but it isn’t clear if it will be an LCD panel or a more luxury OLED panel. An 8K OLED TV would certainly be more exciting, as they are a pretty rare thing at the moment, with the only one available to buy at present being LG Electronics’ Z9 model, which was launched earlier this year.

Xiaomi already has an existing relationship with LG, as it sourced its panels from the company for both its transparent OLED TV, and its regular OLED TV, the 65-inch Mi TV Lux that was announced in July. Those models are both 4K, however.

Another exciting feature of Xiaomi’s upcoming 8K TV is that it will reportedly be able to exchange data over fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. That means it will be able to receive ultra-high-definition content streamed via mobile communication, without the need for an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, Gizmochina said.

The TV will also have a “high-quality audio system, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity", and will most likely run Xiaomi’s MIUI for TV operating system, which is a customized version of the Android TV platform.

Digital Chat said the TV will have a power rating of up to 700 watts.

The Xiaomi 8K TV will be expensive, Digital Chat said, but it won’t cost as much as the Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition, which is priced at 49,999 RMB (around £5,524) and is currently only on sale in China.

The same report also said Xiaomi is planning to launch a new 4K TV called the L82M6-4K.
