LG has released two new series of plasma TVs in the UK market: the PG3000 and PG6000. Both come in 42″ and 50″ versions, and feature LG’s Dual XD video processing engine and 100Hz technology, though neither boasts a true HD 1920 x 1080 native screen resolution.
The LG PG6000 range probably offer better value-for-money than the PG3000: for only between £50 and £100 extra at this time of writing, you get a higher contrast ratio (30,000:1 vs 20,000:1), an extra HDMI 1.3 port (four vs three), an eye-catching “frameless” design, and better USB port functionality (the one on PG3000 can only be used for software upgrades and not JPEG photo viewing).
Of particular interest would be the LG 42PG6000, which will go head-to-head with the new Panasonic TH42PX80 in terms of specifications and price:
Those looking for a larger screen can buy the LG 50PG6000 for just a smidgen over £1000, although be aware that the screen resolution is only 1366 x 768.
In Korea these plasma televisions proved to be a hit… more than 50,000 units have been sold in the first 3 months of 2008. The Xcanvas Topaz (PG3000) released in mid-January racked up sales of 40,000 units as of late March, while more than 10,000 units of the Xcanvas Bobos (PG6000) have been sold since its early March launch.
Among the units sold, 42″ plasmas accounted for 24,000 units whereas 50″ for 26,000 units, indicating a shift towards larger screens as they become more and more affordable. Whether this trend will be mirrored in the UK remains to be seen.

I have been looking out for this model in the mainstream shops in manchester. I haven’t seen it yet. I understand empire direct is selling it but i have never visited that one. Does anyone know whether John lewis has any plan to sell it. I would also be very interested in a review because it would be really interesting to see if the excellent contrast figures quoted actually stack up in real world teating. The set looks brilliant in pictures it will be interesting to see what it is really like.

I want to see a head to head between the 42″ LG 42PG6000, Panasonic 42PX80 and Samsung PS42A457 Plasma Screens! Bring it on (and very soon)! Of main interest to me would be how the black levels and SD quality compare in relation to the 42″ Kuro’s.

I would like to see a review of the 50PG6000 rather than the 42PG6000 since there are some differences. Since 50PG6000 is relatively so cheap in its size class this would really be an alternative for the broad mass if it delivers a decent picture. The 50PG6000 was reviewd by a swedish site that gave it 5 out of 5 but I think HDtvtest is more serious so… please… could you have look at it :)

I was in Selfridges in Manchester Trafford Centre yesterday and saw the 42 PG6000 on display. They had just got it in. First impressions were exceptionally good from a design point of view. It was placed near the PX and PZ Panasonics and made them look very old fashioned. The stand isn’t as slick as it looks in pictures though being somewhat bulky. I had to tell the salesman he was wrongly advertising it as full HD and within a few moments they changed the description. I got the remote to play with the settings. It was set to a very high contrast so reduced this to 50 and put into cinema mode amd warm picture settings. . I didn’t attempt to change the black level, gamma level ect. which I think you can do in the advanced settings. The screen is really sensational not having a plastic bezel. It is just a pure sheet of glass which has a black tint around the edge framing the picture.
Of coursr it is hard to tell how good the picture is. It was playing a jazz scene on a hd feed but the colours looked a bit bright. He put a blue ray disney dvd on about a little french rat who fancies himself as a master chef but this took so long to start playing it reminded me that if I didn’t leave soon my dinner would be cold so i left the shop.
I will go back when I have more time. I still think the PX80 might just pip it for picture quality but if it is close I would be tempted by the much better design of the LG.
By the way Selfridges told me they offer a 2 year warranty on LG products. I am now waiting to see if John Lewis stock it which due to their 5 year guaranteee could be a clincher.
P.S. It was £899 in Selfridges which I consider is far too expensive for a non full HD plasma.
I would really like to see you chaps do a proper test on this set to see just how good it really is!

i purchased the 42″ pg3000 today and i am unhappy. just watch the italy vs spain game and it was damn near unwatchable. every player had a fuzzy shadow surrounding it and the pitch was very blotchy.
i have belkin gold scart cables also which did not make a different. i paid £749.99 in comet and will be taking this back first thing tomorrow morning.
I purchased the PG6000 yesterday after seeing it in all of it’s glory in store.
I was sold on it straight away. It stood out from the rest by a clear mile. Not only does it look absolutley stunning but it has fantastic picture quality too.
Using it to watch a normal digital picture gives an awesome viewing experience.
God knows how I will contain myself when I am able to make full use of it’s HD capability.Truelly a stunning Plasma TV……
I bought this LG 6000 after looking for 3 months for a plasma TV I think it is the best value for money in a 42 inch plasma i don’t think nothing can beat it. the picture qality it is absolutly superb in standard definition. 3 days go i got SY HD and i bought a good qality HDMI cable, and the results are amaising. Next week im buyng a BLU= RAY player to go with my new LG 42″ plasma and im prity shore i will be stunned with the picture qualety, yust as i was with SKY HD. also the desing of the TV is the most biutifull i’ve seen on a 42 inch” plasma. this set is so good that the picture compares with the most expencive £1200 Pionner sets im so glad i bought the LG 6000.
Costco have the 42″ LG on sale for £517 with a 5 year warranty. Bought one the other day, the picture is excellent and the asthetics of the TV are lovely. Go to Costco, buy one. Its an absolute bargain.
