LG Woos Adobe Flash Developers With Smart TV App Monetisation

Flash developers are set to get new opportunities for fame and fortune thanks to the Smart TV platform offered by LG Electronics. The Korean consumer electronics manufacturer is hoping to get Adobe’s developer community on board by providing inspiration for them to create and sell Flash-based applications that are powered by Adobe AIR across many of its products, such as internet-connected HDTV displays, home theatre systems, set-top boxes and Blu Ray players.

LG woos Adobe Flash developers with Smart TV

The Seoul-based technology giant has been in discussion with Adobe in order to enable support for AIR 3 and Flash Player 11 on its LG Smart TVs for next year. This will be made possible through LG’s Smart TV SDK (software development kit) 2.0, which is scheduled to be made available at the end of 2011.

LG is said to be taking the Adobe MAX developers’ conference “by storm” as it demonstrates how developers’ software products can be monetised through the huge Smart television marketplace from LG. Sam Chang, general manager of LG’s Innovation Development Group, said that by joining the LG marketplace, application developers will be able to earn more money for their existing projects. He added that LG can help Flash developers generate more revenue with an app marketplace that spans across eighty countries.

Through the use of LG’s App store developer community website, developers can already start downloading LG’s Smart TV platform SDK (that comes with plug-in tools for Flash development), and create relevant apps. The TV maker also took the opportunity at the conference to highlight the improved user experience of its LG Cinema 3D televisions, which would enable developers to deliver more 3D content to consumers over the internet when used with the company’s Smart TV technology.

  4. If you get a new LG TV 2012, you get Adobe flash 11!..

  5. WTF.. noone asked that, everyone asked when these older will have option to update flash to 11?

  6. Just spend £799 on LG “Smart” TV in Dec and a growing in horror about everything i read on the Flash Subject, especially as no mention when purchasing that i would need to purchase a TV in 2012 to run Flash sites. When will my TV become smart and run Flash sites? Surley here must be a plan ?? Please LG talk to us! Im wondering to check out if this could be a trades description issue?

  7. Hey LG Staff,
What kind of Soup Nazi scheme are you guys running. “If you get a new LG TV 2012, you get Adobe flash 11!” This is total crap. I just bought a so-called LG “Smart TV” for Christmas in 2011. I like the TV, but it MUST be upgraded to Adobe Flash Player 11. I mean come on! Get with the times. I can’t view most newer flash content. What? Are you guys in bed with Apple (Crapple)? Flash is a must have if you want access to the FULL web. I will send out an alert to my 4200 LinkedIn contacts, my 1250 MySpace contacts, my 650 Facebook friends, and my neighbors to warn them NOT TO BUY an LG TV until LG decides to live up to their end of the bargain. I encourage everyone else that got scammed by LG to do the same.

  8. does someone from lg have an answer on why the 2011 models are not being upgraded to adobe flash player 11. the actual you tube site works on my lv 5500 so thats a plus.

  9. I have just brought a 32″ on 5/6/2012 and this tv has only flash 8 and will not upgrade or watch flash content I have vented my anger at being misled to LG and they say we were not misled we should have asked this before buying NOW COME ON!! how old is version 8 they are saying it is a hard where issue I also have a 60 inch i brought 6 mths ago and didn’t ring up to complain about same issue and now that is bad luck so I am told.LG NEEDS to have a plug in to upgrade to latest programs or DONT SELL outdated models it is a scam to get rid of old technology. They are saying its buyer beware that is BULL****

  10. This is ridiculous – there is nothing SMART about a TV that does not allow for constant updating of firmware and important aspects of web browsing such as FLASH! Surely there is a breach of advertising for a “television” that supposedly enables “web browsing” on it being sold when it does not allow for any decent non-Youtube video content to be displayed. What about all the Free to air catch up programs available online that are not supported in the premium content section? At least give them the chance to compete with crap like Red Bull TV.

  11. Why would LG update the flash player on a TV they have already sold, it would cost them money to do it and they would get no return for it….they will instead direct their efforts on the TVs they are yet to sell.
Sad, but that’s the business world.

  12. I bought LG LED 3D Tv 32LW5700..latest…… i bought on 1 feb 2012……….

    Its still have flash problem………….

We cant see other websites…. related with flash player 10 or 11..

so is there in possibility to up-gradations…

My friend have Samsung and he has no problem with flash…..

    Why LG is behind…………………….

    please provide us solutions……

  13. Same TV as Jigar above! Bought in Jan 2012 and unable to view videos on web browser.

Can the upgrades be downloaded to the TV?

  14. Disappointed LG Owner

The Smart TV is kinda dumb if it can’t be upgraded. I would like some functionality to my TV please .

  15. The Web Browser for LG Smart TV is complete crap. What was the point of buying a “Smart” TV if you cannot play videos online?
LG is totally screwing people over. I would like to see a class action law suit on this one against LG. I will join if anyone organizes if LG does not update their flash.

LG staff, you’re a total tool and I hope they fire your ass. Try to understand the problem before replying.

  16. I too have a 3d “smart” tv purchased in June ’11…..and no flash so basically useless. I just purchased IPad, same deal w/flash, but I use an app (iSwifter) and all is well in flash-world. Anyone know of a comparable app we could be using on our dumb tv’s? I’ve been looking with no success

  17. I am writing from Turkey in 2011, I bought 47lw570s seyredemiyorum facebook videos 3d feature, even if not too bad television. I do not recommend .. adobe11 want to support.

  18. I bought this so called Smart TV in 2011 only to discover that it could not run any videos from TV sites on the web. These sites of course use the latest free version of Adobe flash.
When I contacted LG they indicated the ‘hardware’ on this TV could not be updated to run versions later than 8 even though software updates for other items can be downloaded to it. (I was told in the process the TV was not intended to duplicate a PC!).
I personally feel this was and is false advertising. Why does it even have Flash 8 on it if it cannot be updated? Everyone knows Flash upgrades occur frequently and are free for PC users. O I forgot its not a PC…… but its access to the web was a key selling point. The mindset of the developers makes you wonder what they were smoking.
It has turned me off LG.

  19. just fuk_lg plug a deskto to t\your TV and forget ’bout browser’s limitations

  20. LG I was very proud of your products always, since i got yours Smart TV and I’m disappointed one like others on this “very very very SMART TV”. And now I will advise to every my friend and everyone I know, what does the Smart mean! Whats for I need its smart if no access to videos on web sites??? Stop making people deer!!! And I will everyone prevent to buy this kind of bull**t, especially from LG!

  21. I live in the USA bought a LG smart TV to watch German TV..Adobe flash player is not supported. false advertisement.I am pissed off.Give me a break

  22. LG 47LM7600 just did an upgrade yestedsay 11-05-2012, still no Flash player.

  23. Just purchased & installed LG47M7600, Downloaded update & now have flash. Only thing unable to watch is ESPN3. Love’n it so far. Really enjoy the 3D, Played music from Iphone. Having fun trying all the features.

  24. i have the LS5750. What is the highest version of flash i can get??? Yea no ESPN3….

  25. I’m very ubset that LG is not fixing the Flash problem…
Let start a complain campain thru Tweeter, Facebook and other media, maybe they listen when they get stuck with the TV’s that they uild It seems that this big corporation only listen when they don’t meet there sales quota

  26. I bought the 47LM7600 in July 2012. LG customer service told me for months that there will probably be a software update in the near future to fix the “insufficient Flash Player requirements.”
Recently, I had a two hour plus tech call with LG customer service, Executive customer service, tech support and a member of the development team. The outcome from the development team rep, which was news to everyone else from LG, is that there are no plans to update the “in-build” version of Adobe Flash Player for the 2012 SMART TV platform. Only the Google TV, model G2, will get some sort of optimization patch because the G2 operates on the Google platform. So, Google will provide a patch of sorts.
So, no ESPN3, ESPN Live, Yahoo! Finance videos, or most any video content that requires Flash.
How many SMART TV’s do you think LG would have sold if their marketing was accurate to reflect that the 2012 SMART TV’s from LG with their built-in WiFi and full web browser can’t play any video content through that browser because the TV was built with an old Flash player version that can’t be updated.
Flash Player 10.1 is what is on my TV. While my set was built in July 2012, Flash player 10.1 was released in early 2010. Most web content requires flash player 11.x. It is interesting to note that while Adobe released Flash Player 11 in Oct 2011, LG choose to use and continues to use the outdated version 10.x in it’s 2012 models.
I thought that an equivalent Samsung model like the ES7100 series would be an alternative. Nope, Samsung built their 2012 SMART TV’s with an in-build of Flash player 10.1 as well!
The LG developer noted that there are expected hardware and software changes for the 2013 SMART TV products. I doubt that will help any of us who have 2011 or 2012 products.
I could not believe my ears when the LG developer suggested the work around solution to this Flash Player issue was to connect a notebook computer or netbook via a HDMI input! Great support from LG – not!
It is also interesting to note that I tried to post this same information on the LG website in the Q & A section for the 47LM7600 to answer a question posted by DavidX asking when will the flash player be updated to version 11? While I created and account at LG.com, LG did not post my answer. I guess they will not permit any negative comments about their products. It is even crazier that the LG web support tech NeilE tries to shift the blame to Adobe for not updating their product when it’s LG’s design flaw to in-build the Adobe software so that it cannot update.

  27. I bought the 55LW5600 for Christmas 2011 based on being able to use internet service for video. This really sucks! I also got a LG refrigerator, stove and microwave at the same time. I can tell you that I will NEVER buy an LG product ever again if they don’t fix this problem. Yes, you can get Hulu and Netflix streaming with their built in aps, but we can’t stream from Amazon or any other web based video. I can’t believe someone hasn’t come up with a FLV player that could be installed on this TV and make streaming available from it’s web browser. Is it that it is a Lenix system with a Safari browser? When they say it is a hardware problem, exactly what do they mean? What, the hard drive isn’t big enough to download Adobe Flash Player. I wonder what would happen if every pissed off customer called them Every Day until they did something about this.

  28. I bought a 55-LM8600 on 31/Dec/12. It has Adobe Flash Player v10 installed and cannot be upgraded. Not aware of this otherwise I will not buy LG ” smart” TV . Many other cheaper options I can consider.

  29. I bought Smart TV upgrader in 2011 but it could not run any videos from TV sites on the web it doesn’t support flash player 10.
I’m waiting LG to upgrade the software but it seems that it’s none of his problem
These sites of course use the latest free version of Adobe flash.

  30. I boycott LG and I advise you to do the same

  31. Utter rubbish, cant even play spotify because it needs flashplayer – very disappointed with the so called ‘SMART’ TV

Have bought LG TV’s for years……seems things will have to change

  32. Another really disappointed LG customer.
Really disappointed with my smart TV – No flash player.
Repeat what everyone says:’ Don’t but LG smart TV’

  33. Live in Ireland and have a new 37LS570T “SMART” TV. National TV station is RTE which has its own RTE Player using Flash 11. No Flash 11 available for my new TV. Not very SMART LG!

  34. I am very disappointed with my smart lg tv. No flash player, I like download itv player and german films but it is not possible. Im so p….d off!!
