Philips drops Aptura backlight

Philips has quietly dropped its advanced, blinking fluorescent backlights for flat televisions, and will instead focus on LED backlights which are smaller, the Dutch electronics group said on Monday.

While the article clearly says that Philips is making a switch to LED backlights, it does not say if the `scanning’ technology will be abandoned. For those who are wondering, ClearLCD by Philips aims to reduce the motion blurring effect by improving LCD’s response time and the `sample and hold effect’. The latter is reduced by creating a flickering effect similar to CRT, creating better motion potrayal.

Other methods to reduce motion smearing in LCD’s include motion compensated frame interpolation and inserting black frames. Both affect the `sample and hold effect’ in different ways but achieve smoother action overall.
