Pioneer PDP-4270XD Review

It’s up and running…so head over there to see a strong example of a consumer plasma model. PDP-4270XD

  1. Having had a PIONEER PDP-436XDE returned back to manufacturer (yes I know!!!) because of the After Image Retention, I thought about SONY and other plasma screens as a replacement. Seeing the said models in flesh, even under Showroom conditions, made me think twice about how good quality pictures the Plasmas produce. I know you guys have a more in depth view on both products but as I stated in an earlier comment, why should I sacrifice on quality when I am paying so much money just to look at something!

So Pioneer PDP-427XD won hands down. I am pleased with the decision but something still frightens me.. the dreaded After Image retention. Will I get it again..is it there… am I paranoid???

The question I like to ask you experts is this: I’d like to calibrate this TV so i am getting the best out of it without any side effects of AIR problem. I bought a DVD which is called PixelProtector. Seems to be good bit of software but I have no idea how to use the software to calibrate the Pioneer. Anyone has any ideas or suggestions?

  2. Hi Keemal

The Pioneer PDP4270XD that we tested exhibited NO sign of image retention. That’s right, we scrutinised it for at least 300-400 hours since we first turned it on and couldn’t detect any.

We are not familiar with PixelProtector, sorry.

  3. Hi Colin

I have had some experience of this screen uniformity problem with my 436xde and I thought I would share it with you guys.

Back in April 06 I bought my 436xde and it cost me a small fortune but based on the reviews I had read from other, less well informed sites, and at first I was delighted with it.

I had previously owned a Hitachi 42PD4200 and it wasn’t bad but not the best either and my Pioneer provided a major step up in picture quality until, when I was watching football, I noticed some vertical dirty marks on the screen whenever the camera panned from left to right (this was definately not there when I took delivery of the set), at first I thought it was screen burn or image retention but despite my best efforts it never went away.

To cut a very long story short, the panel was in the service centre 3 times and finally after threatening Pioneer with Trading Standards and Watchdog, they agreed to swap out the panel, despite claiming they had never heard of the problem I was experiencing and “no one has ever called about something like this”

2 weeks later the set returned and looked great until something new happened, and this is where I need some help from you guys, whenever the picture pans vertically the picture seems to develop distinct “sections” again I would say it does not look uniform and is only really visible on lightly coloured backgrounds etc.

Do you have any experience of this at all ?

Also would you recommend ISF Calibration for this set at all ? I have DVE but I really don’t know what to do in regards to setting the Contrast and making the Colour Bars uniform.

    Best regards,

    Andy

PS : fantastic site guys, extremely informed reviews for a change !!!
