SMPTE To Host 3D TV Conference

Coinciding with 3D TV being the most talked-about — and perhaps least understood — technology in the HDTV arena at the moment, SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), the video industry standards-setting organisation, has announced that it will host a conference dedicated entirely to this very subject next month.

The International Conference on Stereoscopic 3D Media and Entertainment will take place on 13 and 14 July 2010 at the Marriott Marquis hotel in New York City, USA. Featuring preeminent speakers including scientists, engineers and researchers from the likes of Panasonic and Sony who have paved the way for 3D and are involved in developing future 3D technologies, the conference aims to provide up-to-date insight into important 3D topics ranging from acquisition and conversion to transmission and broadcast, so that CTOs (chief technology officers) and chief engineers in the media and entertainment industry can make educated decisions when planning long-term resource investments in 3D.

The 3D topics to be covered in the conference are as follows:

  • Stereoscopic 3D Image Acquisition
    • 3D shooting with one digital camera “Phantom_65” by Russian stereoscopic system “Stereo-70”
    • Simplicity vs flexibility… an integrated system approach to stereography
    • 3D camera system with real-time image geometry analysis and correction
    • Development of tools and workflow for “run-and-gun” video production in stereoscopic 3D
  • Issues in Spatial Authoring
    • Visual fatigue in three-dimensional subtitle projections
    • Acceptance and perception of digital 3-D films
    • Sensitivity to monocular occlusions in stereoscopic imagery: Implications for S3D content creation, distribution and exhibition
    • Visibility of digital video artefacts in stereoscopic 3D and comparison to 2D
    • Research on 3DTV at NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corporation) STRL
    • Identifying good and bad 2D to 3D conversion
  • Stereoscopic 3D Production and Post-production Considerations
    • Target screen size for stereoscopic feature film
    • Novel stereoscopic content production tools
    • Blu-ray 3D
  • Transmission and Display Technologies
    • What is holographic TV, and will it ever be in my living room
    • Display technologies for 3D
    • Quality autostereoscopic displays
    • 3D: How video compression technology can contribute
    • Transporting 3D content in a 2D world
    • MOBILE3DTV – Mobile 3DTV content delivery optimisation over DVB-H System
