  1. Nice review! I was wondering that it would be nice to have a short comparison between the “former nr 1 model” and “new competitor”. Like how does the D3000 compare to W2000?

It would be easier to compare the curren cream of the crop…

  2. Yes, I’d also be interested to see a comparison between a 40″ D3000 and W2000.

  3. Hi i watched the england game in Hd and noticed the ball breaks up with crossed balls and goal kicks when the 100hz motion is enabled is this a drawback of 100hz technology, did you notice this?

    cheers

  4. Will you post your settings on this tv? It would have been nive:-)

  5. Great review. You confirm what we’ve all been hoping. The Sony is the one. Just one question. You mention a ‘magic combo’ of Cinema Mode and Motion Enhancer. Any chance you could reveal the combo!?

On the subject of tweaks…the range of adjustments that can be made to an HDTV can be quite boggling to the average punter. I’m sure that all the punters out there who buy a TV on your recommendation would love a simple reference table for the optimum settings. Most of us don’t have DIY calibrators let alone ISF but if you could set out the optimum settings (contrast, colour temp, gamma, backlight etc. etc.) in a clear and easy to read table it would be an incredible help. I know there’s an element of subjective preference in all this but I for one would love to know your settings.

    Many thanks.

    Jake

  6. Great review. Two questions:
Why not measure and show us (static) On/Off (use 50% and 100% APL for plasmas) and ANSI numbers? Just for fun. =)
Why do you only test 3:2 pulldown detection performance? 2:2 pulldown detection performance is FAR more important here in Euro-land.

  7. A most absorbing and thorough review. So glad that reviewers such as yourself are now paying more attention to the SD picture quality as well as HD (which is usually a ‘given’ anyway). Would love to know in percentage terms how much, if any, of the motion blur is still left, even with MotionFlow switched on, and if the EPG is still a little blurred like it was on the 40W2000. On that subject, lookin forward to a test on the 40D3000 to see if the larger display ruins the SD pq; and I also hear there’s an S3000 on its way – whats all that about then? Those reviews cant come soon enough – there’s a funny burning smell coming from my pocket.

  8. we still really need to know that magic combo of motionflow and film mode! Please guys! There’s a few punters over at AV forums claiming there’s an issue with this set. that motionflow can only be enabled with HD if auto1 is enabled as the film mode (even games!). Please help to clear this up if you can. there’s a fair few of us on the brink of buying this TV…

and…at the risk of pestering…please post your settings in the future. even if it’s just shots of the menus! would be most helpful.

  9. I would like to see comparison of KDL-40D3000 vs KDL-40W2000.(24p vs HDTV)

  10. Not much point to all these comments if we never get a reply…

  11. @Jani, James, Phil C & Fintian: A comparison with 40W2000 is of course on the cards if I get my hands on a 40D3000.

@craig: I watched football in SD and only noticed occasional frame breaks when [Motion Enhancer] to “High”. What was your settings?

@Glenn & Jake: I’m fairly reluctant to release settings as service menu access is required. But we’ll see…

@Mr_T: 3:2 because we thought HDTVs should be primarily used to watch HD. But we’ll take your suggestion on board and assess 2:2 in the future.

  12. Hi guys (Vincent and anyone else who wants to contribute),

This is all a bit confusing for me to be honest.
1080p TVs will only have a better picture than 720p TVs if you’re watching a programme with a 1080p source, right?.
The only 1080p sources available currently are blueray/hd-dvd (or some ps3 games).
Sky HD is broadcast in 720p or 1080i so picture will be better with a 720p TV (than a 1080p TV as it needs upscaling), right again?
And then you’ve got SD satellite/freeview TV that will always look better on a 720p screen than on a 1080p screen.
If I’m gonna be watching 80% of SD and Sky HD tv (the rest being some blueray films and games on the PS3), it seems to me that there is no point going for a 1080p tv…
Broadcasts in 1080p won’t happen tomorrow or in a few years time, so why get a 1080p TV (except if you’re only gonna be watching bluerays….)
But then I see that the Samsung M87 is priced at £950 (Dixons) while the new Sony D40 (100 Hz but 720p res only) will likely cost £1,200. Feels kinda weird to fork out almost £300 more for a TV with a lesser resolution (but better processing technology which I guess guarantees a better picture).
Buying a TV is a nightmare, it shouldn’t be that complicated!

  13. hi vincent

i had the motion enhancer set to normal

  14. Please post your settings. Especially since you have to enter the service menu.

    Thanks in advance

  15. A real pity that it doesn’t have a swivel stand.. which I need.

My only hope is that I could swap the stand from my parents’ V-series :)

I looked on the Sony website for the manuals of each, but the D-series one unfortunately doesn’t show the back of the TV in enough detail.

  16. HI

    Sony KDL32D3000 Calibration .

service menu- see graphs below – R 512 Change ??
    G 512 Change ??
    B 512 Change ??

All new Setup calibration Colour service menu – change ?

  17. @Craig, I wonder if the fact you were using HD means that the processor in the TV can’t really cope with Motionflow on HD sources properly?

@Vincent, you didnt tell us what the magic MotionFlow/Film combo is? :)

  18. @Vincent: “@Mr_T: 3:2 because we thought HDTVs should be primarily used to watch HD. But we’ll take your suggestion on board and assess 2:2 in the future.”

Thats great! You are already one of the best testers around the net and this would make you guys reach top spot, I think.

3:2 pulldown detection performance only has a meaning when 1080i60 HDDVD/BD-input is used. For film-based Euro 1080i50 HD-content and all film-based 576i SD-content (from internal or external DTV-decoder – and SD is not going anyware anytime soon) good 2:2 detection performance is essential. Also, I have seen sets that have rather ok 3:2-performance which fails bad when it comes to 2:2.

The Peter Finzel testdisc (www.peterfinzel.de) has some simple testpatterns for different 2:2 tests (and some tests for video-based content, incl diagonal-lines). Other than that, any DVD/BD/HDDVD-movie with interlace-input will do fine. I have done reviews in the past and I know time is a big factor but I think a small test would not be that time consuming.

And, calibrated ONOFF and ANSI numbers would be nice. Not that they tell us everything about “real” performance (far from it) – but they do show that specified numbers are so far from the truth it is’nt funny.

    Keep up the good work!

  19. Just got myself the Sony 40D3000 and I’ve been disappointed with the SD picture quality….what can I do to improve it (apart from an HD source obviously) ? Even the Freeview channels aren’t great.

  20. It would be great if the D3000 review is updated with PS3 since the D3000 has 24p!

    Ime

  21. I now have a 40D3000. This is far better for SD then any other TV I have researched recently.

  22. So why is my SD picture so poor ? I’ve got a Sky digital signal and have always had a great analogue aerial signal so was expecting pretty good Freeview pictures.

The SD picture is grainy and pixelated. There are halos round people and PS2 signal is even worse. I’ve tried gold scart cables and still no better.

An engineer from the retailer has been and claims that its a standard LCD picture for a 40″ screen !

  23. Dave:

Generally smaller tvs handle SD better. Perhaps the 32D3000 would be more to you liking? I had a Sony 40W2000 and the SD picture ranged from very good to terrible. I tried a Pana 37px70 and found the SD to be better overall, although the HD would be better on the Sony

Zoli: By far the best LCD SD picture I’ve seen is on the 37pf9731d. There should be a 9732 version out soon. It’ll be interesting to see how that compares as it is meant to be a 1080p panel

  24. You did not say how good or otherwise the 32D3000 sound was. You rated the Panasonic LXD700 very highly for sound, so how does the Sony compare to that, and are the speaker on the side, bottom or back?

Also, i notice one can get the Sony for less than the Panasonic now!

  25. Hello,

I’m having a problem with the 32D3000 and I want to know if anybody else has this problem: on grey and light blue colors, it stays darker in the corners.
Sony has already replaced the tv but I still have the same fault on tv, dvd, ps3 (in 1080p) and on recorded things. The service man has been again but there is nothing he can do. He told me to go back to Sony.
I just want to know if anybody else has noticed this on their tv?

ps. I have a cheaper model (the kdl 32U2000) and on that one I don’t have the problem.

  26. yep ive got the same thing on mine, and ive noticed that when moving horizontally on games with alot of greys or light areas, like shadow of collosus makes some lines, shadows screen uniformity apparant. guess thid is similar to the clouding issue with thw W2000, would be nice to know if anyone else has noticed this, ive had two replacements now and there all slighly different, and tried them with different sources to. leading me to think its just a nature of lcd.

  27. Hi
I am also having a problem with the kdl 32d3000.Only a week old the picture in analogue mode has started to switch off on its own. It stayed on again for about 10 seconds before going off and now goes off within 1 second. It is also accompanied by a loud click from the TV as it switches off and the led remains green. No problem yet in digital. Has anyone any ideas. Have yet to try the help line but will tomorrow when it opens.

  28. But this magic combo to have the inverse telecine?

Have you tried a lot of combination and you can’t what was the right, is true?

    Thanks for the good review…

    fano

  29. The review of the 32D3000 was fantastic – until I found this site I was confused and found no solice in the high street where the level of knowledge was pathetic – so thanks for a GREAT website.

My question is – does the 40D3000 look as good, perform as well, and have the same features as the 32D3000?

Also, if I go for a D series am I mad to be missing out on the 1080p capability? i will be subscribing to SKY HD to get the high def content.

Finally, the DVE calibration DVD is billed in the reference article as for Plasma calibration – will it work OK for LCD, or will I need something else?

Thanks, in anticipation. And great work on the reviews, the URL is now firmly in my favourites list.

    Peter

  30. Robbo,

I’m having the same problem too but have only noticed it when playing a recording from my Sony RDR HXD 710 which is connected via scart. It often takes 30 mins for the set to first switch itself off and then it turns back on after about 10 seconds. Following this I am getting switch offs every 10 mins or so. The green light also stays on throughout.

  31. Mark,

I first noticed the problem when recording from a Sony VCR but it continued to happen when not recording. Disconnected VCR and DVD and it continued to happen. Connected both units up again and the problem has not returned. Sony service guy has been out but as problem has stopped said he would need to take away the TV. Reluctant to do that as it only a couple of weeks old. Alo still cant tune the TV to the VCR. It will not pick up the VCR signal despite following instructions. Have renewed the Scart but only with an inexpensive cable. Not sure if this has a bearing on problem but will try another VCR soon.

  32. Robbo,

    The latest on my problem….

The case of the disappearing picture continues. As before it only happens when playing back a recording from my hard drive recorder. I also have a DVD player connected and there’s been no problem with that.

I called Sony Support who confirmed that it’s a fault so I haven’t bothered swapping or replacing leads. They gave me the local service centre number but like you I’m reluctant to have something less than a week old repaired. I bought the set from Empire Direct who are happy to replace it with another once they get stock, which hopefully should be later this week.

It would seem to be more than a coincidence that these faults have been a result of connected equipment. If it helps my hard drive recorder is connected via the Smartlink scart socket.

  33. Mark

It seems you are in a better position than me. I also rang Sony Support and was immediately told that it was a fault on the TV and to have in my case CoOp replace the TV.( i did get the impression that this fault was not new to them as she asked about the green light staying on and once confirmed there was no further discussion).CoOp however said they needed a case number from Sony which they said they would obtain. CoOp then rang back and said SONY needed an idependent engineer to confirm that the TV was displaying this fault. As the fault had stopped when he turned up I am back to square one.

  34. Robbo,

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. I’ve got the new set and there’s been no reoccurence of the fault though strangely the picture doesn’t seem quite as good on the new one.

    Cheers

  35. Hi,

just got a 32d3000 and presently have it connected to an external aerial and watching digital channels. I’ve noticed thin black vertical lines across the whole screen flash up accasionally and then disapper. Some times it’s fine, and on some channels its more frequent. Most apparent after a darkish scene.

Connections are fine and playback through a DVD recorder is okay.

Before I call Empire or Sony, is this some kind of digital noise/artifact or likely to be a fault with either the screen or built in digital tuner.

    Regards,

    Nick

  36. All this 40D versus 40W stuff would be largely irrelevant if Sony stuck the 100 mhz motionflow technology on the 40W. Anyone know if/when they plan to do it?

Incidentally I keep reading that the 40D had 720 res only, but Sony’s own website says it has 1080p. Can someone enlighten me (a non-techy).

  37. Anthony,

Sony have released 100hz on their upper range of televisions the X – series which is the full 1080 TV. The new W3000 range doesn’t have it.

The D3000 range of TVs only have 720 lines on the screen, but it can accept a 1080p signal and then scale it down to fit the TV’s resolution.

  38. Scratch what I just said about the W3000 range, I’ve just double checked the Sony website and according to the detailed specs the W3000s have 100hz motionflow. There is a major difference in price however over the D and W ranges; 40D3000 can be had for about £750, and the 40W3000 for about £1250.

  39. HELP!!!

Like a knob I have adjusted the settings in the service menu on the advice from the forums here and although I only did what they said I now cannot change the screen aspect and get a TT– or Test message when I use the button.

I have tried turning off the mains, any help appreciated…!

  40. Regarding the Sony Bravia 32D3000.
Could someone please publish a list of the full picture settings required to get optimum performance from a freeview signal, e.g sharpness, brightness, colour, etc etc.

Oh and if you could, the optimum settings for watching DVD’s.

  41. I would also be interested in optimum settings for freeview and while my xbox360 looks amazing, freeview is suffering from motion blur, halos around heads and a lack of crispness to the images.

I have been tinkering with different combinations of backlit on/off and vivid picture mode and cinema settings to no avail.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  42. I’m looking to buy this or the 40W3000. Anyone know whether the KDL-32D3000 is end of line? Is there an announced new model coming out soon?

  43. I have just got a Sony 32D3000. Nice set, nice pictures. Built December 2007. BUT I cannot get it to tune into Ch5 and the other channels on Freeview MUX A.
The Ch5 is OK on analogue and also Sky, and also from the output of a Sagem set top box. The aerial strength shows 100% signal.
The manual is not very clear on how to mannualy tune into the Freeview if it is not done via the auto set up.
Is this an easily correctable fault or is it back to Sony?

  44. It appears that the 32D3000 does not like “daisy chaining” of the aerial. The answer seems to be to go direct to the TV and all is well.

  45. i have purchased my 32D3000 and noticed on the back a 50Hz on the back, even though when i talked to
the guy in the shop he said it was a 100Hz. every website i go says its 100Hz. has anyone else got a 50Hz on the back if so what does this refer too!!!!!!!!

    Thanks

  46. NO WORRIES FIZZY !

The 50hz on the back of your tv refers to the electricty supply, all tvs will have this on the back ! and alhough it says 50 hz on the back ,it has no connection at all with the 100hz that you are referring to,the 100hz refers to the rate that the tv scans at !
So don’t worry ..it can be very confusing with all the tech talk.
    Regards
    Peter

  47. The 50Hz refers to the UK power supply frequency. The Sony will internally use this x2 as the clock for the screen refresh frequency.

  48. Help, I need to tune my Bravia from UK signal to US. Its technically capable. Any ideas on how to do this? its a 40u2000

    thanks, any help appreciated

  49. hi,
feel like a right pillick, but here goes, always buy sony so bought the 32d3000 from the internet. set up was a dream but i can’t seem to get my child’s v smile working. i don’t know any technical stuff, so i’ll understand if you have a little snigger at the next part!! on our old dinosaur we just plugged in the yellow, red and white adaptors into the set and hey presto on av1, the magic appeared. on our new one, zilch, what am i doing wrong!!! please help, feeling very small and silly!

  50. Filbertfatknacker

Had a Sony CRT 100 Hz before this LCD and boy have I been sold a lemon.
Trough the virgin standard box and the free view, motion blurring big time I may not know much about lcds but boy I thought TVs would have come on leaps and bounds.
Not so. I want to watch TV without a fuzzy halo around anything slightly moving across the screen. Without forking out £400 or so a year for HD TV,

  51. Please help!

I have the same problem as Andy in comment #39.
I’ve been in service menu and now cannot change the screen aspect and get a TT– or Test message when I use the button.
Can someone please help me to get the tv back to normal?

Andy are you still here? Did you get a solution?

    Any help appreciated! Thank you!

  52. Does anyone know if the KDL32D3000 will be able to display the Hi-Def (in Hi-Def) pictures from the Freeview trials that Ofcom just announced?

It’s not clear to me whether you need to get a new set-top box with DVB-T2 to receive these pictures (which is completely insane from what I understand – how can they expect people to switch to digital by forcing them to either buy a Freeview telly or set-top box by 2012 and then turn round and say you need to go buy another one because it won’t work anymore??), or that they will be using the existing DVB-T standard to transmit MPEG4.

The other issue is whether the KDL32D3000 can deal with MPEG4 on its DVB-T tuners, or if it could have a firmware upgrade to do it?

    Any thoughts?

  53. To get out of the service mode, (Test tt) remove the batteries from the remote
and put them back on again. You will be able to use Wide button, and freeze button normally.

  54. to john, youve saved my life thanks for the advice about the tt service mode, have been searching for this for weeks and really begining to panic, once again thanks.

  55. i’ve had a KDL-32D3000 for just over a year, can’t really fault it appart from the audio side is a bit weak. A real problem has now started to occure. Occasionally the TV started to switch off then on automatically Digital mode blank screen/audible click. Now it’s doing it more frequently, it’s worse when the TV is first switched on (room temperatere) it appears to improve when it starts to warm up. anyone else got the same problem ? i suspect it may be a power supply fault (TV power supply not power source problem mains supply).

  56. Bruce, my 32D3000 is over a year old and today it has started doing exaclty what youre one is doing???? Im puzzled?

  57. Hi Guys…

My 32D3000 has started to turn itself off and back on automatically just last night.

I checked the timers and it wasn’t that and I also removed the batteries from the remote but the problem still persists.

    Any ideas?

  58. Hi,
An amazing coincidence. My KDL 32D3000 is 17 months old and started doing this same thing last night! Trouble is I didn’t pay for extended warranty and Sony claim that it is not a known fault! Help!

  59. Coincidence indeed, called sony who said it needed to go to a service centre for repair – not convinced at all.

  60. Lloyd B have you got a telephone number I can call them on?

  61. You guys may be interested in this site

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-televisions/856093-sony-32v3000-goes-off-then.html

There are 10 people there who have the same problem…more or less within a few days of each other. My set is 16 months old and on Monday morning the problem started. Sony haven’t heard of it and john Lewis are coming out tomorrow but there are too many people having the same problem…at the same time….this is weird and we need someone in Sony…high up…to pay attention

  62. Mark D…copy this page and the ones from AVForums…and then contact Sony …..and try and let them tell you there isn’t a hardware fault. I rang Sony Support today and they said they weren’t aware of the problem which is more down to their poor fault recording and if everyone logged a fault with them it will log and be visible. Even without extended warranty there is a rule about “fit for purpose” and 17 months old is not a reasonable life span for a TV. Trick might be to get Sony to agree some sort of funded repair because of the number of peole having the problem.Good luck

If everyone here could also post on AVForums then we can collate some sort of mass complaint

  63. Have just spoken to the Sony Service Centre and logged the fault.

I was told that it is a “broadcast issue” and that Sony are aware of the problem which is affecting the D series and a few other models.

I was told that there is no problem with the TV.

Sony are invstigating the issue and will make an announcement on their web site soon.

I suggest that you if you have the same problem that you ring Sony on 08705 111999 and log the problem and see what they say – I spoke to Hardip.
If you are told anything different please let me know what they say!

  64. That makes sense if there was some sort of upgrade by Sky/Freeview or whoever. Its too many people at the same time to be a coincidence. I’ll pass on this page to the JL engineer tomorrow.

  65. top gazza i note your comment on the AV forum about the “broadcast issue” and the sky box.

However, I don’t have a sky box so it can’t be that!

  66. By way of update I have just been contacted by Sony and been informed that they are investigating the issue which they believe to be connected to the BBC transmission signal.

  67. Top Gazza,
Thanks for that I will have a look at AV forums and post my comments. My TV was doing this while watching a video last night and so I can’t see how the BBC signal can be causing the problem can you?

  68. The only thing I suppose is that the TV may still receive a signal from the aerial whether your watching a DVD or not.

I’m going to disconnect the aerial tonight and use my PS3 and see if it works okay.

  69. I will try the areial unplug aswell 2nite – thank you all for your input, i would of been lugging the set to my nearest sony centre and stumping out cash to fix the “unkown” problem.

  70. I re-tuned my freeview channels and the problem stopped. I was watching a DVD when it started but not sure what the TV was tuned to when the problem started.

  71. The cause seems to be narrowing down to the BBC signal. Even when playing DVDs the set is still getting a TV signal…from Sky or Aerial or Freeview. I think the guy at Sony was being a bit premature in “blaming” Sky and probably meant that as the source of the signal. Hopefully this is not Chinese whispers.
Be interesting if those that try disconnecting have the problem as well. The reason given by SOny was that the signal is upsetting the bandwidth that the set can cope with. Be even more interesting if other makes are affected. Its possible…..no panic…that the Sony is not capable of coping with whatever issue there is with the “new” signal. Just speculating but a massive product recall wouldbe horrendous

  72. I reported the “switch off” problem to Sony in August, when my TV was approx 10 months old. Sony said it wasn’t a known problem and put me in contact with a TV repair company in Oxford, but they said they couldn’t do anything without seeing the problem for themselves. At the time it was a very intermittent problem, so nothing was done. However, in the last 2 days I’ve had this problem happen 4 times, mostly when the TV is switched on from cold (happens after just a few seconds). I’m going to contact Sony again, but the TV is now just over a year old so I’m not expecting a helpful response. However, I’ve got a 5 year warranty with John Lewis, so I’ll be contacting them as well.

  73. My 13 month old KDL32D3000 started turning itself off and on again on the 3rd of November. Sometimes the picture freezes before it turns off for 10 seconds. I tried a ‘reset all’ of the digital set-up which includes a re-tune of all tv channels, but that didn’t work. I am just connected to an aerial receiving from Durris. I have now disconnected the aerial to see if it still happens….

  74. Same thing for me KDL32D3000 15 months old. It’s not Sky, mines doing and i don’t have Sky ? Started last night and also i have a 26 sony lcd running on the same ariel and working fine !!

  75. I have the KDL32D3000 and it has just started to turn itself off and on as well. It’s one year warrenty ran out in August and I am concerned that I will be left standing with any repair bills. The problem seems very intermittant but sometimes frequent enough to the point that it is becoming unwatchable.

  76. I too have a 13 month old KDL32D3000 which started to turn itself off and on again, accompanied by a loud clicking noise, yesterday (03.11.08). Whilst watching Sky channels through a Sky Plus box, it turns off approximately every 5 minutes. Whilst watching BBC1 freeview, it also went off after 5 minutes. However, we have now been watching ITV analogue for 15 minutes without incident. This is really odd! I will be contacting Sony tomorrow. I am hoping that Sony come up with an answer to this, as I will not be happy if my £700 tv is broken after only 13 months, just after the warranty has expired!

  77. I have a KDL-32D3000,and yes my set is 14 months old and the same fault is happening!! Twice today i was on BBC1 the picture froze went blank and the tv switched itself off and back on again!!This tv set has hardly been used!!
Just so happens the analouge signal is to be switched off next year and digital replaces it in the area i live!!
Any update on this poblem? Is it the tvs or is it the broadcaster.

  78. I cannot believe this, my TV is 14 months old and is doing the exact same thing! I’ve been going out of my mind thinking I will have to buy a new TV!

  79. And here I was thinking it was just me… Oddly enough mine’s just over a year old, and started turning itself on and off on Monday. I must admit I thought it was a heat thing at first, as I’d been away for a couple of weeks and the house was rather cold, but from reading on here I now doubt that’s the cause. It’s odd how it always seems to sort itself out after 30 minutes or so. I used to think I knew how TVs worked, but now I’m not so sure…

  80. Just to add a me too – bloomin annoying too. Luckily with john lewis, so covered if the TV knacks up…

  81. Have just spoken to Sony. They’re still working on the problem, and will issue an update on this website when they have more info:

    http://sonycic.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/sonycic.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=79hEz6ij

  82. Its definatly the BBC signal….as I have unplugged my aerial lead and just using Sky and the problem has ceased. Sony will have some product recall/repair issues to deal with…lots of them.

Only seems to be the D series affected as I can’t see anyone complianing about the same problem on other models or even other makes of TVs…..

  83. I recommended the KDL32D3000 to a friend, just after I bought mine last year. He hasn’t experienced any problems so far!

  84. Sony have issued a solution.

  85. We started seeing the picture off fault on Monday afternoon – after finding the avforums thread and this thread about it, we carried out the advice on the sony website (turn off at the mains for 1 minute) and the fault seems to have gone away – here’s hoping that it’s a permament fix.

  86. Hello
My nans just got a 46″ sony two months ago were now on the 3rd set after some slow starting service, today after the latest install the set seemed to “switch off” although sound was still on through surround sound and green light on tv still on! Annoying with film etc!!
Simple on off seems to get it back after few minutes.
    Can anyone help?

  87. Have very similar problem of switching off/on, but with a 3 month old KDL-32L4000 which I can’t find listed elsewhere on this site. Happens after 3-5 minutes of turning on, whether with aerial plugged in or not. Sometimes it happens later, even after 1 hour. After 5-30 seconds it comes back on. The TV has just come back from 10 days at a Sony repair shop where they reckon a loose connector was the fault….except the fault is exactly the same as before! Technician’s coming again on Tuesday….any tips on what to make sure they check for? Surely if they can’t fix it we should be talking replacement…

  88. was informed about “loose connections” but go for new set. nans got new sky bow aswell now and hase been good for a week or so.

  89. Hi, I am having the same problem. Is there a simple solution to this problem? Do you know what is causing it? thx

  90. Same problem for me with the set going to standby & then back on after 10 seconds. Noggin said ‘Sony have issued a solution but this page is not available now. The general fault page doesn’t seem to have anything on it apart from the sleep timer issue.
I’ll try ringing the help line if turning off at the mains doesn’t cure it but it would be nice to know if someone has a proper fix for the problem.

  91. Hi Tim. I have the same problem with the TV turning off for 10 seconds. I would love to know what Sony say if you happen to ring them as my 12month Sony warranty has just finished. Any advise from anyone?

  92. sean . My Sony is 18 months old and started the fault yesterday. Picture has now got coloured bars all over it occassionally.

  93. My 19 month old KDL32D3000 is currently u/s with vertical coloured bars all over the display. Repair man says new panel required.
Thank goodness I have a five year warranty (through John Lewis).
Repair man not surprised at fault – has seen quite a few like this – and told me to expect another panel replacement before the end of the warranty period.
Seems to be potentially a very expensive buy – certainly without the extra warranty.

  94. TO MIKE S.

My 18 month old KDL32D3000 is doing the same as yours – vertical coloured bars all over the screen.

It started switching off then back on again few weeks ago – then the bars appeared last night, now they’re there all the time.

I don’t have an extended warranty so any ideas would be appreciated.

  95. My 17 month old 32D3000 has been doing the on/off problem for a few months now too. I get the loud click even after I have it on standby sometimes too. Going to call John Lewis this mornign and see what they say. Hooray for 5 year warranty.

  96. Hi, hope someone can help me.
I have a Sony kdl-32u2000, I switched it off as normal (using the main power switch on top) last sunday night. On monday I switched it back on and nothing! No picture, no sound not even the led lit up. I checked the fuse in the plug and also the one in the back but both are good. I left it unplugged for 24 hours then tried again, still nothing.
I have no warranty as I bought it off a mate 12 months ago, so any help or estimate on repair cost would be appreciated.
    Cheers!

  97. I’ve started experiencing the “switch off” problem again while watching Channel 5. Called Sony this morning…waiting for them to investigate and get back to me. I mentioned that a similar problem occured last year and that a solution was posted on the Sony website (but URL no longer exists!).

  98. Had 32D3000 for over a year and noticed this switch off problem soon after getting the set. I realised it was a broadcast issue as it only happened on cetain channels and would appear and disappear. Didn’t happen on analogue TV. Also happens when set is on standby (occasional clicking noise). Recently happening on channel 5 as described above. Also get a subtle line appearing in the centre of the screen after this happens.

I’m pretty sure this is a software defect in the TV set where the firmware crashes causing a partial reboot if a non-compliant DVB multiplex signal is received.

Bottom line is that Sony should fix their software. Other manufacturers sets dont reboot with the same broadcasts. The software should handle this kind of issue.

I tried to leave Sony an email via a webform on their site but haven’t had a reply.

If anyone else talks or emails Sony, don’t let them fob you off with a clumsy workaround like switching the set off and on again. Sony probably wont fix this unless enough folk complain as its a software fault.

  99. Sony didn’t bother calling me back, so I called them again. Got usual response, i.e. switch off, unplug aerial, leave for 10/15 minutes, reconnect. If this doesn’t work they recommend calling again!

  100. I have exactly the same problem on my kdl-32d3000 purchased in summer 2007. Does anyone know the exact cause? Is it definately the LCD panel? Is it another component? I’ve fixed the screens on my sons iPod and LG Renoir telephones recently at very little cost compared to the manufacturers q

  101. I have exactly the same problem on my kdl-32d3000 purchased in summer 2007. Does anyone know the exact cause? Is it definately the LCD panel? Is it another component? I’ve fixed the screens on my sons iPod and LG Renoir telephones recently at very little cost compared to the manufacturers quoted prices so I thought I’d have a go at trying to get a part for this tv. Does anyone know exactly wht part needs replacing?

    Thanks

  102. Hi guys, I’ve got this TV and i’ve got an upscaling dvd player in a DVI format. So i’ve bought myself a DVI to HDMI lead just when i plug it in, i get picture but no sound? I tried putting the sound through composit but then i get no picture :S could somebody help me out on what to do? I lost the manual =[
    cheers.

  103. I have a Sony Bravia S Series KLV-37S310A/KLV-32S310A and it was bought here in Thailand in November 2007 and as of last week has started showing exactly the same problem as most posts here….intermittantly turning itself off and on with a audible click….but by leaving the tv on it seems to “warm up” and stops showing this problem after 10/15 minutes until its shut down over night and is then turned on in the morning to which this problem is most noticeable.

Is there any positive feedback coming from Sony? I like most have gone over the years warranty and absolutely do not want to go out and by a new TV!!!

Any responses would be most appreciated.

  104. I have a 7 day old Sony Bravia KDL-40-V5500 and we have were not able to get picture when we turned it on earlier. The sound was coming through fine and the stanby light was on. It was basically in the same stae as when you put it to “picture off” mode.

To resolve I had to turn it off at the mains for about 30 mins. I found this tip on several forums where others have had the same issue.

I’ll be taking the tv back to the shop for a refund on monday as I don’t want to have to do this again next time the software fails. I am guessing it is a software failure by the way!

  105. Well I’m back again

Ever since us in the UK have had to re-tune our freeview boxes my KDL32D3000 has been cutting off again. Does anybody else have this same problem?

  106. Yes, it’s started again but a bit worse than the last time (more frequently). I can’t remember what I did to fix it last time but it was something to do with turning it off.

Can anyone else remember the turn off fix?

    Tim

  107. Hi all,

Yes, I’ve been getting this problem for a while now, but it’s definitely been occurring more often since the freeview re-tune a few weeks ago. Highly annoying!!

  108. Nice long thread in Avforums on this dating back to last year and resurected because of the current issue. Worth a read but there are two things you can try that are workarounds.

    1. Tune Freeview away from five or ITV for that matter to, say, BBC1 before going to SKy

    2. And/or turn of software updates in the Freeview service menu.

But there is still a problem with these TVs and it IS related to the Freeview tuner. Sony admitted this last year and got the BBC to redo the update but it took some time and getting everyone to put in support calls to SOny to do that. This time they deny all knowledge….just like last year.Appalling response from Sony. Hassle them

  109. A quick update…

As per topgazza’s advice, I deactivated the ‘auto service’ and ‘software download’ options a few days ago, and it does seem to have made a difference. It may be a bit early to celebrate, but I certainly haven’t noticed the TV re-setting (unless it’s been doing it behind my back!).

I don’t have Sky, to couldn’t try the other suggestion gazza had, but doesn’t seem like it was necessary in my case.

  110. Yep = no idea why, but the annoying turning off, loud click and turning on post the Digital retune seems (so far) to be cured by turning off the auto software and tuning update options – poor show Sony

  111. We’ve got a Sony Bravia KDL-40D3000. It turns itself off and on all of the time at the moment – every 20-30 minutes. It happens when we watch sky hd or play on the ps3 both through hdmi leads. We looked on the menu on the tv to search for hd devices and none were found……. surely this is not normal when we’ve got a sky hd box and a ps3 box plugged into the tv.
Spoke to a sony centre in newcastle – £80 call out charge just to come and look at the tv! Never mind attempt to fix it – shocking!
    Any help would be appreciated.

  112. I had the same problem with my Sony Bravia KDL 32 LCD switching itself on a and off. I switched off the software download and the auto update which appears to have resolved the problem.

  113. Same problem here with our KDL40D3000. Very erratic, just as you think it may have stopped, it comes back with a bang and happens every 10 minutes sometimes.

Have just switched off the auto updates as others have suggested so fingers crossed it helps.

  114. same switching off problems with my kdl-32d3000. sony dont want toknow.
thankyou “topgazza” your tip seems to work (turning off auto software andsoftware download)

  115. HI, just reading all replies to the switching off problems, I have the same problem but being “old school”, how do you turn off the auto software/ software downloads? make the response as simple as possible please!!, thanks.

  116. Thanks everyone above, also had the switching off problem on my KDL32D3000 intermittently since I got it, but never that badly, maybe once every month or so. I actually put it down to our Virgin cable box! Suddenly got worse this weekend and at one point was doing it every 10 mins. Very annoying and I expected very expensive – I found a similar thread on a US website where people had been replacing $240 dollar circuit boards….!

Anyway, to answer Paul above. Turn the TV on and press digital to switch to the digital tuner (Freeview). Press menu and go to the settings option at the bottom.
Next choose the digital menu (the little screen with the D in it).

Go to the techincal settings menu at the bottom of that part and you should see the Auto Software and Software Downloads options on the top of the menu that appears. Select each one and you get an option to choose on / off.

  117. i am so glad i found this thread !!
we have the KDL32D3000 for 3 years and in the last few months we have had the same intermittent switching on/off including when watching dvds.

i have just tried out Simon B’s suggestion about disabling the Auto Software & Software Downloads… it seems to be working.

    thanks to everyone… especially Simon.

    no thanks to Sony.

  118. Well my prob seems worse…32″ bravia purchase two days ago. Has now decided to turn itself off every 5 mins whilst tuned into freeview channel 301 (BBC red button) all remote controls are disabled and it seems we are stuck watching Over the Rainbow interactive forever. We can not get to the menu as every button is diabled. Help!

  119. i have a 23 month old kdl37p30 which switches itself on and off every few seconds for up to 10 mins before it stays on. sometimes it does it whilst watching. out of warranty , anyone got any ideas what the problem is and how much to repair.
Are Sony aware of an inherent problem
