LG Display readies first dual Hz OLED panel for mass production

LG Display says its first 32-inch OLED panels that support 480Hz at 1080p resolution, and 240Hz at 4K, are entering mass production, which means we should see the first such monitors utilizing the technology soon.

The new panels are highly anticipated because the best 240Hz at 1080p panels already outperform the most advanced 360Hz panels, with OLED’s faster response times ensuring less motion blur. Being OLED, they also deliver superior contrast, more realistic colours and true HDR pictures, plus other advantages.

So there’s a lot of anticipation that LG’s 480Hz OLED panels will deliver similar advantages over the latest generation of 540Hz LCD monitor panels.

The South Korean company announced plans for its first 480Hz OLED panels late last year, and this week told FlatPanels HD that the new products have now entered mass production. The 32-inch panels notably will enable users to switch between different resolutions and frame rates to maximize the user experience.

According to LG Display, the secret sauce is a new technology called Dynamic Frequency & Resolution, which makes it possible for users to “prioritize between refresh rate and resolution by adjusting the image processing speed.” According to LG, gamers will be able to switch between 240hz and 480Hz using a hotkey or the joystick’s directional switch, enabling them to choose the best mode based on the game they’re playing. That’s important, because fast-paced action games and shooting games are generally better with a higher refresh rate as it translates to smoother gameplay, whereas visually-rich, story-driven games are best enjoyed in native 4K resolution.

The DFR technology is first expected to feature on LG Display’s new 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel, the company said.

The new panel will first be seen on the LG Electronics 32GS95UE monitor, which is set to launch before the summer. It will be based on the latest generation of OLED, featuring Micro Lens Arrays or MLA technology that directs more light output towards the viewer, delivering higher brightness and superior energy efficiency.

To take advantage of the technology, the user will be required to have a PC graphics card that supports rendering at 480 frames per second.

While LG is reportedly getting its hands on the new displays first, Asus is expected to follow closely behind with its new PG32UCDP monitor, which also features the same panel.

Besides its 32-inch panel, LG is also mass producing a 27-inch 480Hz OLED display with 1440p resolution for ultra widescreen monitors, and that is expected to show up in products such as the Asus PG27AQDP later in the year too. It's the first OLED panel to enable 480Hz at native 4K resolution

The faster panels give LG Display a distinct advantage over Samsung Display, whose fastest panel is a 27-inch, 360Hz QD-OLED display.
