LG Electronics reckons its flagship 2022 TVs will be able to render the most stunning scenes in Dolby Vision that have ever graced a living room display.

TVs powered by LG’s latest Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor will be able to boost the performance of Dolby Vision IQ, an enhanced high dynamic range format that’s already more impressive than standard Dolby Vision.

LG says its 2022 TVs will be the first in the world to feature Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Rendering. The company said the feature helps to adjust the light level in every part of the screen to boost the contrast, sharpness and detail of Dolby Vision pictured.

The new capability will appear on the 4K LG C2 and G2, and the 8K Z2 OLED TVs, as well as some of its 4K and 8K QNED (Mini-LED) models. Other TVs, such as the LG B2 OLED, will not get Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail as they lack the latest silicon.

The company said the upgrade works with any kind of Dolby Vision content, not only pictures that have been tailored for “Precision Rendering”.

The regular old Dolby Vision HDR delivers a superior picture in all conditions. It works by using a sensor to automatically detect the light level in the room, so it can adjust the TV’s picture settings to suit the conditions, reducing glare and ensuring deeper blacks.

Dolby Vision IQ takes it further with its Precision Rendering feature, which improves the contrast and detail even more. According to LG, it results in more detail being visible in darker scenes, and superior contrast between any dark and bright elements.

We’re yet to see Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Rendering for ourselves so it’s impossible to confirm the company’s claims at this time. Some viewers may be wary of a technology that’s designed to enhance a signal, as Precision Rendering apparently does, but LG told Inside CI that its intention is simply for viewers to see the most accurate representation of Dolby Vision content.
