Philips has repeated its customary TV launch that comes in the wake of the annual CES show, announcing two new models for 2022 including the successor to last year’s highly regarded Philips OLED806. 

The new Philips OLED807, as it’s called, is the first to specifically mention LG Display’s next-generation 'OLED EX' technology that’s said to incr ease the panel’s overall brightness. It also boasts a four-side Ambilight mood lighting system and a 120Hz refresh rate. 

Other features in the new TV include Philip’s 6th Gen P5 AI picture processor, which works to boots the overall image quality by optimising brightness, colour response and gamme in real-time to suit the ambient lighting conditions. Philips said this works with any source, from standard definition to HDR. 

Philips said the OLED807 will be available in 48-, 55-, 65- and 77-inch screen sizes in the first half of 2022, with prices to be announced later. 

The new OLED EX panel is likely the same one that will appear in LG Electronics new C2 and G2 OLED models, though Philips has become the first brand to officially use the term. OLED EX is reportedly 30% brighter than standard OLED, which means its superior to the OLED Evo panels that came out last year, adding a 20% brightness boost. The OLED EX panel is thinner too, so Philips has been able to shave 4-5 mm from the OLED807’s bezel. 

Philips said the improved four-side Ambilight feature will improve colour detail and make for a more immersive experience. Gamers will likely appreciate this TV, thanks to its support for HDMI2.1 features like variable refresh rate, 4K @ 120Hz, eARC, FreeSync Premium and G-Sync. 

Philips said there’s a Game Bar menu that will make it easy to tweak the picture settings while a game is in progress, and it also offers various different gaming genres such as First-person shooter, role-playing games, sports and so on. 

Other capabilities include wide HDR support in the shape of Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, HDR10 and HLG, the addition of IMAX Enhanced certification for the first time and the Android TV 11 operating system. The TV is also equipped with a 70 watt 2.1 channel sound system. 

Another neat feature is the Philips OLED807’s support for DTS Play-Fi Home Theatre, which enables users to hook up compatible external speakers wirelessly, with the TV’s own speakers acting as a dedicated center channel. 

In a second announcement, Philips unveiled its next-generation “The One” LED TV, the Philips 8807. Aimed at buyers who want premium features at an affordable price, it does of course lack the premium OLED display and it only has three-sided Ambilight and packs the company’s older 5th Gen P5 picture processor. Even so, it has all the gaming features required for console gamers as well as strong HDR support. It too, supports DTS Play-Fi Home Theatre.
