Samsung Display has officially unveiled its first 77-inch QD-OLED display panel to the world, a key expansion of its product lineup. The launch is expected to be followed by the first 77-inch QD-OLED TVs sometime next year. 

To date, Samsung Display has only produced 55-inch and 65-inch QD-OLED panels for TV makers. Its parent company Samsung Electronics, and Japanese firm Sony, were the first two companies to launch QD-OLED TVs this year using Samsung Display’s panels. Given the rave reviews received by both Samsung’s S95B QD-OLED TV and Sony’s A95K, it’s expected that there will be big demand for the larger models when they go on sale next year. 

QD-OLED is a new kind of display technology developed by Samsung Display that’s said to combine the best aspects of QLED and traditional OLED, so you get more brightness, more accurate colours and higher contrast ratios than either of the older technologies can produce. In addition to TVs, the first QD-OLED gaming monitors were also launched this year, by Samsung and Dell’s Alienware. 

Samsung Display unveiled the 77-inch QD-OLED panel at a special industry show in Busan, South Korea, and the event was reported on by a number of South Korean outlets. The launch of the bigger-sized panel has been rumored for some time, but this is the first time Samsung Display has officially confirmed it will go on sale next year. The company didn’t provide many details, but it’s almost certain that the 77-inch panel is a 4K resolution display. 8K QD-OLED displays are still likely to be a coupe of years away, industry observers believe. 

Neither Sony nor Samsung has announced any plans to launch a 77-inch QD-OLED TV thus far, but given the positive reception of their first TVs, it seems likely that they’ll be interested in offering customers a larger model next year. After all, LG Display’s 77-inch OLED TVs have been available for a couple of years now and were also generally well-received. So, CES 2023 could well be the time when we hear more about their plans. 

Samsung Display is also said to be developing a smaller, 49-inch QD-OLED panel, but it’s not yet clear if that product is aimed at TVs, monitors or perhaps both.
