TCL has announced it has even bigger plans for its 2022 TVs than it first revealed, with the launch of a massive yet “accessibly priced” 98-inch QLED TV. 

The Chinese firm has already professed its love of big screens this year with the launch of its XL series TVs earlier in the week. Now it’s going even bigger, with the 98-inch R754 TV that’s set to go on sale for just $8,000 (around £5,900) when it hits the shops. That’s quite a bit cheaper than rival super-sized offerings such as Samsung’s 98-inch QN90A, which is priced at $15,000 (approximately £18,000). 

TCL said the Google TV powered R754 will come with four HDMI ports, of which two will be able to support 4K signals at 120Hz, making it a good choice for gamers who want to totally immersive themselves in their gaming worlds. Other features include Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG support, as well as Variable Refresh Rate from 48Hz all the way up to 120Hz.

That suggests the R754 won’t be one of TCL’s TVs to benefit from its refresh rate upgrade to 144Hz, which was outlined earlier this week for a number of sets. Of course, console gamers won’t care, though it could be something PC gamers appreciate. TCL is yet to say which models will receive this update, but it’s likely at least some of its previously announced XL Collection TVs will. 

That range includes TCL’s flagship model, the X925 Pro, which is an 85-inch display that comes with a super-thin OD Zero Mini-LED panel with thousands of local dimming zones. 

TCL has also announced its partnering with Pixelworks to support TrueCut Motion processing on some of its new TVs. The idea with TrueCut Motion is to display content motion that’s more consistent with the filmmaker’s intent, which it does by minimising processing issues such as judder. That’s one feature that may well make its way into the 98-inch R754, though it remains to be seen how useful it will be as there is not much TrueCut Motion content around at present.
