Walmart is really doubling down on its TV ambitions, with the latest news being the expansion of its Onn brand. The company has reportedly debuted a new 4K streaming dongle called the Onn 4K Pro, and it appears to be one of the best streaming devices of its kind that money can buy, beating many of its rivals in the specifications department. 

The Onn 4K Pro hasn’t been officially announced and it cannot yet be found on the company’s online store, but it has been spotted out for sale in physical Walmart stores. That was noticed by the YouTuber SUPERDELL-TV, whose video caught the attention of AFTV News first of all. 

The device is said to be priced at $50, which works out at around £40 in U.K. prices, and it appears to be a direct rival to the Google Chromecast with Google TV device and Amazon’s latest Fire TV Stick 4K Max, though it will also compete with devices such the Apple TV 4K and Fire TV Cube, which cost a lot more. 

What’s interesting about the Onn 4K Pro is that it appears to be much better than Google’s most recent Chromecast dongle, at least on paper. The Onn 4K Pro comes with 32GB of storage and 3GB or RAM, with Wi-Fi 6, whereas the Chromecast has just 8GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, with Wi-Fi 5. Both of the devices run the latest version of Google TV, which means the specifications are really the main differentiator. 

Besides beating the Chromecast on specs, the new Onn box has another little tick that sets it further apart from its main rival, as it comes with a remote control that features the Google TV “magic button” (represented by a star symbol), which is a feature that first appeared in the beta preview of Android 14. It’s a new button that users can assign to a streaming service of their choice (rather than the dedicated YouTube, Netflix buttons that can't be changed), or else used as a quick switcher between different TV inputs, Flatpanels HD reported. 

Besides the Magic button, which is a first on any streaming device remote, there are dedicated buttons for Netflix, YouTube, Disney+ and Paramount+, and the device also seems to support Dolby Vision and HDR 10 as well as Dolby Atmos, for HDR pictures and surround sound audio. 

The Onn 4K Pro is set to go on sale in Walmart stores across the U.S. sometime this week, and is currently available in a few select locations as we write. 

The launch of Walmart’s new device will almost certainly put pressure on Google to revamp its Chromecast, which has not been updated for quite some time. It remains to be seen if the company will actually do so, but there is a distinct chance it might announce something at the upcoming Google I/O event that kicks off on May 14.
