IMAX Enhanced is an AV certification programme that guarantees the equipment you’re using and the content being watched on it will deliver the best possible picture and sound quality. The standard was developed by IMAX Corp. and DTS, and combines IMAX’s digitally remastered 4K High Dynamic Range content with DTS’s audio technology.

Sony ensured that its TVs met a “carefully prescribed set of performance requirements” in order to achieve IMAX Enhanced certification and carry its logo. The requirements were established by IMAX and DTS engineers to provider the “highest-quality, sharpest 4K HDR images and powerful, immersive sound to the home”, Sony said.

The first Sony TVs to receive the IMAX Enhanced certification include its Master Series ZG9 8K HDR full array LED TV, its AG9 4K HDR OLED television and the XG95 Series 4K HDR full array LED TV. Those TVs are said to deliver premium picture quality, with colours, contrast and clarity that’s almost on a par with a professional monitor, Sony said.

The first IMAX Enhanced content from Rakuten will only be available on those sets, and includes Sony films such as Venom, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

“We are thrilled to support our collaborators to bring the IMAX Experience into the home with this new and exciting format,” Pete Wood, senior vice president of Digital Sales at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment said in a statement. “IMAX Enhanced content continues to deliver on our promise to provide consumers with the best at home viewing experience.”
