Apple tvOS gets slick UI refresh and user profiles

Apple has revealed what we can expect to see in the upcoming tvOS 26 operating system update that will come to its premium Apple TV 4K streaming devices later this year. It’s promising a dramatic refresh of its user interface that will enhance its aesthetic appeal and create a more “fluid” experience for users.

In a blog post, the company explained that the refreshed UI is the result of Apple’s new “Liquid Glass” design ethos, which focuses on more fluid and seamless transitions and translucent designs, and is being rolled out across every kind of Apple device – including iPhones, iPads and Mac computers.

That said, the redesign doesn’t seem to be too radical, but the modern and consistent new look should be appreciated by most users. The new visuals are the big lure of tvOS 26, featuring translucent elements such as the control centre on the home page, creating a more “immersive” effect for users, Apple said.

Apple TV users will also find that content is easier to find and access, with the UI featuring larger, poster-style artwork for movies and shows when they browse through the Apple TV app. There’s also a new profile system, which seems to be similar to the ones found on Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video. Users will be able to create their own profiles, so each family member will see their own, highly personalised content recommendations. As such, users will get their own personal watchlists and playlists in both the Apple TV and Apple Music applications.

Other updates include a new "karaoke mode” in the Apple Music app, where the iPhone can act as a microphone for anyone who doesn’t own a dedicated mic.

There’s also a useful update relating to Apple’s AirPlay. Once tvOS 26 arrives, users will be able to select which AirPlay speakers they want to be the default audio option for their Apple TV 4K streaming box. That’s an improvement, because at present users have to select the AirPlay speaker every single time they switch their Apple box back on again after turning it off, unless they happen to have an Apple HomePod linked to it. They’ll now be able to select any AirPlay-compatible speaker as the default option, and the sound will immediately be channeled through that device, rather than the TV. So you won’t need to manually select your speakers every time.

There will also be an improved FaceTime app for Apple TVs, and a few new wallpapers to choose from once tvOS 26 is launched. The company says it will come “later this year”, but has not yet announced a release date.
