ASDA Launches Budget 40″ Full HD 1080p Freeview LCD TV Priced At £299

There are many people who shop at the supermarket giant ASDA because it offers competitive prices on its groceries. However, it is not just groceries that the company is offering cut-price deals on. Over recent years ASDA and many other supermarkets have started selling products such as home furnishings and electrical items, including a range of flat-screen TVs from a variety of manufacturers.

Asda's Luxor LUX-40-914-TVB LCD TV
Asda’s budget 40-inch Freeview LCD TV

The supermarket chain has this week launched the latest bargain in its electrical range in the form of a 40-inch, full HD LCD television for just £299. Carrying the “Luxor” badge, the LUX-40-914-TVB (no, we don’t know why there are so many hyphens in the model number either) is expected to be popular amongst those who are looking to upgrade their televisions, but do not want to spend extra money on more established TV brands.

Over the years, the supermarket has become renowned for the value for money that it offers, and it seems that its low pricing is now extending to its home entertainment range as well. The Luxor 40″ LCD TV offers a range of features, and whilst it is unlikely to deliver the best picture quality on the market, it is one that will appeal to the budget conscious, or those that may be looking for a second TV for the bedroom or kitchen in the home.

Some of the features found on the Luxor HDTV – an ASDA exclusive – include Nicam stereo sound, a full HD 1080p native screen resolution, two HDMI inputs, and an integrated Freeview tuner. With many consumers looking to cut back on outgoings in the current economic climate, this deal from ASDA will enable consumers who may otherwise have had to settle for a smaller screen size to enjoy the benefits of a large-sized TV with a range of features at a very low price.

  1. Is this story just a shameless press release in disguise?!

So NICAM is on the feature list? Whoop-di-doo. Given that Freeview does’t use NICAM at all, and the analogue terrestrial channels that do broadcast it are being turned off it begs the question – who gives a toss?!

Meanwhile we’re none the wiser as to the contrast ratio or whether it does FreeviewHD or not. I suspect that it is probably 2000:1 to the former and no to the latter.

  2. I bought one of these to use as a PC screen. It’s a nightmare!! I have to plug my old screen in and change the resolution first before I can use the HD screen (every time). If I don’t the screen just goes blue. Really disappointed!

  3. Melissa, that’s your pc, not the tv…..

  4. have been trying to find out if this will conect to PC as want to use it as display monitor in or shop. thanks for that.

  5. The Luxor tv is Fab!! great features great price and guess what I took the small panel off to see who makes it and its an LG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not suprising really as lLG make screens for every one!! by the way I also have a smaller Sony Bravia in the bedroom and other than slightly better colour its not worth the extra £500!!!

I love reading comments from the tv nerds it makes me laugh!!

  6. My mother bought this for the grand kids room in her house. I

  7. My mother bought this for the grand kids room in her house that I have just refitted for her. I was mortified but may change my views on things in the future, I bought her two 55 INCH 3d smart UED8000 and 46 INCH UED7000 LED sets and a Panasonic 50 inch 3D VT25 and I can honestly say the picture is great and it cost less than the controller for the 8 series lol. Great deal amd maybe ill stop being a dick and snob in the future.

  8. I have just bought the Luxor 40″ from Asda, and its a great picture and great value for money, my daughter has two much more expensive LG tv’s and there picture is no better than the Luxor, the only thing that lets it down a bit is the sound, its a bit weak, so i plugged in a sub woofer and it improved a lot, but the sub out is not linked with the tv volume, so the sub level stays at a set level and does not go up and down with the tv, and the sub output is full range and not crossed over, but still its a great buy.

  9. This is one hell of a bargain. Don’t be a snob, save yourself around £200 and buy it!
If you’re taht worried about the badge then download a LG badge from the net and stick it on

  10. Got this and every so often it goes to a black screen with a green rectangle showing that I am using hdmi 1. It only lasts about 5 seconds but it’s really annoying and I can’t stop it. Anyone know how?

  11. We bought this 40″ as well and the only problem I can see or should I say hear is that the speakers are really rubbish sound quality!!! Is there a speaker upgrade for this set?? Otherwise really happy.

  12. Frank, this happened me on my TV but it turned out to be a fault in the HDMI lead. I got another lead and the problem was solved.

  13. now available from asda for £249 brilliant

  14. I bought this t.v. but the only complaint I have is on the freeview we cannot get the yesterday channel (channel 15 I think) and viva music, and film 4 and 4 music. Yet we get it on the freeview box no problem. Is this something to do with the t.v. or maybe my aerial? ~Any help would be appreciated as we like the t.v. and don’t want to have to put it back to Asda.

  15. i have a question-how do i turn the blinkin thing off?
i dont really wish to leave it on standby

  16. I am going to upgrade my TV and this sparked my interest. I’m no expert on the techie stuff but it sounds like good value for money?

  19. May i add it doesnt say anywhere on the specs page of asda or whichbuy or any other site? because if its 50 i wont be buying it!

  20. I bought one of these today and it worked great for a couple of hours, now however it says there are no channels saved and it cant find any. Will wait to speak to the helpline tomorrow before I decide if it’s a bargain or not.

I have to say though it looks great on the fifty quid asda stand. So hope I’m just being a tech fool.

I want to but one of these TVs and want a true and honest opinion on it preferably from someone who has had one for about three months upwards.

  23. I have a 40″ full HD that I bought in march and its fantastic the only problem i have is finding out what size bolts I need to hang it on the wall mount.

  24. i bought the Luxor Tv from Asda and was working fine until three days ago that the picture gone black and i can only hear the sound. Please can anyone help me on how to correct this. Is it a fault that needs repair and if so, how much can the repair cost?

  25. To Florence, the same thing happens to ours now and again, it drives me insane…it started happening just after the warranty ran out, typical…oh and last week, we switched it on and it has decided to go black and white! We bought a budget brand cos we didn’t have the budget for a branded one, now I think it’s just false economy as this is the 2nd supermarket branded portable TV that hasn’t lasted!

  26. hi could anybody tell me how to get external speakers on its a 32inch luxor, cannot find anything in menue on remote, got this second hand without manual, cannot get surround sound to work..tele is great for what i paid for it..

  27. I recently purchased the 46 incher for £299 almost creamed myself, hd channels the lot and with the money I could have spent I bought a bluray happy as Larry lmao

  28. How do you delete the subtitles, other than using the subtitles button as mine doesnt work

  29. I posted on 28 September 2012. About my new luxor 46 incher well less than 4 months later it is goosed and with asda refusing to replace or repair it I am totally gutted wish I hadnt bought this pile of excrement, stay clear of these tvs nothing but misery and asda have been a total letdown ill be shopping at tesco from now on! You have been warned.

  30. Nothing wrong with this equipment, until it comes into contact with low power transmissions, less than 3 watts. Completely blocks the picture and distorts the sound.

my mother bought a luxor last june, the other day we put it on stand by and went out, came home to no sound. she’d lost the receipt so bought a new tv. i brought the luxor back to my house and my partner just did a first time installation ans reset it to factory settings. viola, the sound is back and it is working great. ANY problems i’d try this first.
