The BBC achieved another landmark first with the launch of a new second-screen Top Gear app for BBC Worldwide viewers when the new series of the show kicked off this month.

Called Top Gear Bingo!, the app was developed on the Monterosa LViS platform, and invites viewers of the show to keep an eye out for cars, items and well-known phrases associated with the motoring TV show, ticking them off one-by-one in a similar fashion to the classic bingo game. BBC says that the app is free-to-play, and can be accessed via local BBC websites. Global viewers can also link the app to Facebook, invite their friends to play alongside them and try to outscore each other during the live broadcast. Each episode will feature a brand new Top Gear Bingo! game, says the broadcaster.

Tom McDonnell, commercial director at Monterosa, explained that LViS’ versatility was the reason why BBC chose to work with the developer for its new app.

“Using LViS we can develop fantastic second-screen apps capable of scaling globally and living anywhere. We’ve worked closely with BBC Worldwide to enhance the viewing experience for Top Gear fans, while at the same time giving broadcasters a new channel for creating advertising opportunities and activating sponsorships,” explained McDonnell.

“Second-screen apps have a very exciting future and we’re delighted that LViS is leading the way in the deployment of global apps for mainstream TV shows.”

The second-screen app made its first appearance last Sunday, when the new Top Gear Series 19 aired across the world on BBC Entertainment, BBC HD, BBC Knowledge and BBC America.

Duncan Grey, Top Gear’s commercial director at BBC Worldwide, said that the app was designed to enhance enjoyment of what is one of the channel’s premiere programmes:

Top Gear Bingo! adds a new dimension to the viewer’s experience, allowing them to look out for items, words and phrases as they watch the show, and compete with their friends to see who can get the best score,” said Grey.

“We’re sure that the app will be well received.”
