Gigabyte is set to become the first company to launch a new monitor based on LG Display’s much-vaunted Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel, and Asus will likely not be very far behind it.
The two companies have both confirmed plans to launch their first Primary RGB Tandem OLED monitors, with Gigabyte set to do so as soon as July or August, and Asus promising to do the same before the end of the year.
They’ll be 27-inch monitors, as that is currently the only size being made available to monitor makers by LG Display.
Announced in January, the Primary RGB Tandem is LG Display’s most advanced WOLED panel thus far, designed to compete with Samsung Display’s latest generation QD-OLED panel, which currently dominates the market for high-end monitors, with many more sizes available. LG Display has pointed to advantages such as the higher brightness and superior colour accuracy of its latest WOLED panel, though it remains to be seen how it compares to its rival’s technology.
You can learn more about the Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel in this video:
Gigabyte revealed its plans during this week’s Computex show in Taipei, Taiwan, saying that the 27-inch MO27Q28G (pictured) is likely to launch either in July or August, with a special discounted price of just $500 for early birds. What’s interesting is that Gigabyte claims to have overclocked the panel, boasting a 280Hz refresh rate, above the 240Hz specified by LG Display. The display will deliver an impressive 1,500 nits peak brightness and supports AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync, and is also DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified, the company said.
It seems very likely that Gigabyte will be the first to market, for Asus did not announce any specific Primary RGB Tandem monitors at Computex. However, the company told TFTCentral that it will definitely launch a new monitor based on LG Display’s latest WOLED panel this year, but didn’t give a specific launch date. It promised there will be further details made available soon.
Curiously, one thing Asus did talk about separately is an upcoming 540Hz OLED monitor that will launch later this year. Considering that Gigabyte managed to overclock LG’s panel, it’s very possible that Asus has achieved a similar feat. LG Display says the Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel is capable of achieving refresh rates of 240Hz/480Hz at 4K and 1080p, respectively, so if Asus has also managed to overclock it, it could very well be the same panel that it was referring to.
It’s not yet clear if LG Display’s parent company LG Electronics also has plans to launch a Primary RGB Tandem OLED monitor this year, but we wouldn’t bet against it.
While LG Display is currently only manufacturing a single monitor-sized Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel, the company has promised to expand the range to additional monitor sizes in future, so we can expect to see additional products for gamers soon – perhaps early next year.
In any case, gamers have lots to look forward to in terms of monitors. In addition to LG Display’s new technology, we also have Samsung Display’s latest monitors, and there are yet more up and coming innovations too. For instance, TCL recently unveiled a series of inkjet-printed OLED monitors, and Samsung Display this week announced plans to launch its first Ultra-Thin OLED displays early next year.
