LE40M86BD Or KDL40W2000?

m86-w2000

Received heaps of email asking if the Samsung LE40M86BD is better than the Sony KDL40W2000 (winner of our previous 1080p LCD shootout). Here’s my short take:

Samsung LE40M86BD: slightly deeper blacks, doesn’t need service menu access to achieve D65 colour temperature, three HDMI 1.3 ports, much less clouding, prettier EPG, cooler remote, Picture-In-Picture, digital audio optical output, arguably better aesthetics, cheaper price.

Sony KDL40W2000: better shadow detail, better video processing, slightly wider viewing angle, no reflection/ glare, better stereo imaging, faster menu navigation.

I’m Still Confused & Can’t Make Up My Mind!

I always try to refrain from making personal recommendations because I don’t know what’s your viewing preference, but here goes.

Choose the Sammy if:

  • You thought this day would never come… but you’d like to get your hands on an LCD TV with blacks so deep it hurts (credit to Colin not me).
  • You’ve just sold your Ultra THX-certified Monster component video cable with 24k gold connectors and <0.00001 ohm resistance on eBay, and bought a couple of cheap HDMI replacements from eBuyer with the intention of "digitalising" your home theatre with Sky HD, PS3 and HTPC (and Xbox 360 Elite when it comes out).
  • The idea of entering service menu and adjusting values you don’t even understand using non-conventional buttons on the remote scares you to death.
  • You’ve always wanted a glossy panel to complement your equally glossy PS3… your neighbour describes you as “the one who polishes his car more often than he drives it“.

Pick the Sony if:

  • Your TV is going to be placed facing the window where the sun shines in, and after blowing your wad on the TV you are too poor to buy blackout blinds.
  • More than half of your movie collection are Region 1 (NTSC) DVDs, and given the favourable exchange rate (£1=$2 anyone?), you plan to set up dedicated distribution channels with Amazon US and DVD Pacific.
  • You cream your pants at the thought of seeing every little darkest crevice in “Batman Begins”. (Is it just me or Christopher Nolan’s films generally demand the best of shadow detail? e.g. “The Prestige”)
  • You dig this Sony Bravia advert and want to see for yourself what clouding is all about.
  • You work from home (or have someone at home all day)… just in case you need to swap your 40W2000 a few times to get a cloud-free set.

  1. Great stuff – but with the Panny PX70 at around £1k and the Pio 4270 about £1200 we have 4 great sets and only one space to fill – so now whats the help in deciding please?

I really want to sell my average Sammy 32″ R74 and get the set I’m gonna stick with for the next 5 years!

  2. kool, was wondering which 1 to get and still dunno, prob go 4 sammy

  3. That vid is hilarious! Excellent comparison.

  4. the Samsungs reflective screen just bothers me most, even in a dim setting you will always see stuff like lights etc reflecting in the screen

I saw it myself, and it was worse than my old CRT

  5. Thankyou Vincent. I have put the Sony completely out of my mind now thanks to the video you put up.

The clouding issue would really bother me.
The Sammy’s reflective screen would be fine with us because we have venetian blinds and blockout curtains on all the windows.

Here’s a link to that above video. It’s easier to make out the problem at full size.

  6. …but what about the X2000 ;o)

  7. The Bravia KDL(insert size here)X2000 range also suffer from clouding.

  8. The Dabs.com price is now £1,021.99 inc VAT.

  9. …for the Samsung LE40M87BDX I mean!

Vicent i want to ask, if it possible to do shootout more detailed with the sonny bravia kdlw2000 and the samsung LE40M86, TO DECIDED WHAT IS THE BETTER LCD 1080P.

    THANKS,António Oliveira,Portugal

  11. António, I think this gives us enough details surely? You have full reviews of both products and this quick ‘head to head’…

  12. Just what been waiting for, will go for the Samsung,

    Thanks and great website

  13. Do you mean that you can’t play region 1 DVDs on the Samsung even with a multi-region DVD player(is it PAL only?) That would rule it out for me. Thanks btw for providing all this useful info.

  14. After reading the “comparison” it seems to me like more of a joke than letting us know what is the strengths and weaknesses of each set compared to the other while considering which one to buy..

    I am a bit disappointed……

  15. Really pleased with my Sony 40W – there are cloud free sets out there you know and my TV is one of them ! In anycase I dont need a 40″ mirror in my room ! that you would have to constantly polish to keep the dust off.

  16. Just to clarify – Region 1 DVDs are fine.

  17. Where do you enter the dicount code, is it after you click place order on the dabs site?

  18. Don’t worry the code was for dixons

  19. I’m confused. The review above clearly suggests that you should not get the Samsung if you have a lot of Region 1 DVDs. The specs say ‘PAL’ whereas the Sony is ‘PAL/NTSC/SECAM’. Gary (above) says Region 1 DVDs are fine. Can anyone confirm that you can play Region 1 DVDs on the Samsung?

  20. I’m really sorry, it seems using RGB there is very poor colour seperation. However through Ext 2 it’s fine.

  21. Guys, sorry for the confusion… let me clarify.

NTSC DVDs (which most Region 1 DVDs are) require that either your DVD player or your TV correctly detect 3:2 cadence before proper film deinterlacing can be applied.

If you output interlaced signals (either 480i or 1080i) from your DVD player to the Samsung LE40M86BD with “Movie Plus” disabled, the TV can’t detect 3:2 cadence and therefore doesn’t apply proper deinterlacing, so you will see scan line artifacts like combing, jaggies and line twitter.

Turning “Movie Plus” on will solve this problem, but cause unnatural motion and loss of the “film-like” effect.

Hence my comment about NTSC DVDs: if you output interlaced signal from your DVD player, the DVDs will still play on the Samsung LE40M86BD, but you will see more artifacts (depends on whether you know what they look like in the first place).

Hint: a compromise is to let your DVD player do the deinterlacing, i.e. output progressive signal. But if your DVD player only output a maximum progressive resolution of 720p, you have to rely on the Samsung LE40M86BD to perform the scaling (the quality of which is average) to 1080. But then again, it depends on your screen size, how far you sit and how well-tuned your eyes are before you can discern this difference in resolution.

  22. Hi Vincent,

Why do you think I have ‘offset colours’ through scart RGB?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for that info Vincent. It just bso happens that I have always intended to buy an Oppo DV-981HD 1080p dvd player anyway when i purchase a panel.
That way the player would do everything.

  24. Vincent any chance of naming the music track playing on this video its ace thx:P

  25. I have a Denon DVD-1920 and the AVR-2807, which has a 1080p upscaler. Will the M86 show NTSC-DVD’s correctly, with or without Movie Plus enabled if I run the signal through the AV-reciever?

  26. What about the looks? The Sammy is innovative and looks state of the art. The Sony looks old school. I am still confused also because the thing is I still did not see a set that can do it all for me, as you might expect with this pricetag.

  27. Am I correct in saying that The Package deals that some retailers/ manufacturer/ whatever– are offering for eg./ buy a Sony LCD/Plasma ..and get-Discounted or Free/ Sony DVD Rec…+ Sony Home Cinema system guide us towards a particular manufacturer because a Sony/Sammy eg. Dvd player interlaces/deinterlaces/cadence/etc etc etc with a Sony/Sammy panel etc etc etc, I have limited knowlage unlike a lot of peoples responces on here it seems a bit Technical etc. and really confuses me more than when I started, maybe just go for a picture I like in the shop and the cheapest-
