LG Display has revealed a bit more information about its upcoming 27-inch, 540Hz OLED gaming panel, which is set to appear in its first monitors later in the year. It boasts a native resolution of 1,440p, and it can boost its refresh rates to an incredible 720Hz if you don’t mind sacrificing a few pixels and switching to 720p.
The company first teased the new panel earlier this year, and while full specifications still elude us, we know that monitor brands like Gigabyte and the Chinese firm Super Display Company will be among the first to launch models based on the tech.
LG Display showed off the 540Hz monitor panel at the K-Display 2025 event in Seoul, South Korea last week, alongside the 5K2K panel that’s found in the already available LG UltraGear OLED 45GX950A.
At the event, the company reiterated that the new panel is based on its most advanced, 4th-generation Primary RGB Tandem OLED technology, and is capable of delivering 1,500 nits of peak brightness, jumping to an incredible 4,000 nits when HDR mode is activated. Although the company did not specify this, it’s likely that 4,000 nits only applies across 3% of the panel at any given moment.
In addition, LG Display cited 99.5% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, matching the capabilities of earlier panels featuring Primary RGB Tandem OLED. That’s the highest among all existing OLED gaming monitors, and a level that’s suitable for professional content creation tasks, such as colour grading and film production.
Perhaps the most exciting prospect for gamers is that they’ll be able to utilise LG Display’s Dual Mode technology, which enables the refresh rate to be cranked up to an even more blazing-fast 720Hz when dropping the screen resolution down to just 720 pixels. It would ensure probably the smoothest gaming experience money can buy, reducing motion blur and increasing responsiveness in fast-paced games, allowing for more rapid visual updates – which could, in turn, provide a critical competitive advantage for those who take their gaming seriously.
Another compelling advantage is the special anti-reflective film applied to the display that’s designed to eliminate screen glare, which can be seriously off-putting, especially when playing during the daytime. According to LG Display, the coating it has applied combines with an improved panel structure to block 99% of all internal and external light reflections. As such, the company claims it can maintain perfect picture performance, without distractions, even under conditions of 500 lux, which equates to the brightness of a living room or bedroom in broad daylight.
Thanks to this, LG Display said the panel has achieved an array of certifications, including Perfect Black, Perfect Colour and 100% Colour Fidelity from independent testing organisations such as Intertek and UL Solutions.
We’re still waiting for more information on when the 540Hz panel will actually launch, but it seems certain that this is aimed at the higher end of the gaming market, targeting eSports players and such, so don’t expect the first monitors to be cheap.
