PDP-LX508D Non-Review

I know it is neither famine nor death, but to someone who spends most of his time calibrating and reviewing flat panel television, there’s no sadder sight than this:

Broken Pioneer PDP-LX508D

This is the Pioneer PDP-LX508D I was going to review that’s broken out-of-the-box… now it is the most expensive door step ever. As you can see, the plasma glass has cracked probably due to maltreatment during transport. In case you’re wondering why the screen looks so grey and not as black as a Kuro should be, I had to use camera flash when taking the photo, or else you won’t be able to see the cracks clearly.

This sort of thing – unfortunate though it is – do happen in the real world. So what can you do to protect yourself?

  • If you’re unable to inspect the television on the spot when receiving the package (which is most likely to be the case), jot down “Unchecked” beside your proof-of-delivery signature so that you (and the dealer) have some comeback should insurance need to be claimed.
  • Buy your television from a dealer who’s known to provide good customer support, even if the price isn’t the cheapest. In my case, I called Tony at TLC Broadcast up, who immediately arranged to send new one out early next week and collect the broken one at the same time. It’s when things go wrong that you discover who cares and who doesn’t.
  • There’s a reason manufacturers specify that the box containing the plasma TV should be sat upright during transport: if left horizontal, the sheer weight of the panel could easily crack the glass when the van/ truck goes over a bump.

It’s a real shame, because I’ve been looking forward to running in and tweaking the Pioneer PDP-LX508D (which I expect to be a cracking screen given the past performances of the Kuro plasmas) this weekend. Ah well, a brief respite then…

  1. Wow it’s a shame for such a perfect screen to end like this,
I’ve seen one running at a shop today with some hd CGI animation movie and it’s amazing how the picture looks good considering it’s not full hd and 50″

  2. I understand that the selling points (online or shop) are starting to fit a dongle of sorts (a sort of indicator) that shows if a set has been mishandled in transit.

There is a small plastic/ glass tube or globe with an indicator inside – if Green, the unit should be OK, if Red then you simply do not accept it from the courier.

That or they specify a company that does a point to point delivery with a two man collection and delivery.

Far to many sets are being poorly handled by the ‘caring’ big 4 couriers.

  3. radius: ehhhh, this panel is full hd at 1920*1080p

  4. That’s an unpleasant sight for any plazzy fan,but why cant they manufacture screens with thicker or at least toughened glass like bullet proof CRT’S used to be. I really don’t think the extra weight would be a problem for most people

  5. Pete: Yeah I was confused with the non-lx one ^^

  6. I’ve been to a Courier’s warehouse/dispatch centre to collect a small package and this cracked LX508 doesn’t surprise me considering how I saw them at the back throwing around packages like they were playing rugby.

Actually, it was worse than pretend rugby. They were throwing packages from one giant mobile trolley to other smaller ones without catching them.

  7. Request:PWM noise test and CRT comparison. Thanks.

  8. Can’t wait for the review! I would also like to say well done for including a motion resolution test in your reviews as this is an important and often overlooked aspect of a panels’ performance.

These are truly the BEST reviews around. Vincent, your hard work is highly appreciated, stuff the critics.

  9. Worked for one of the worlds biggest ww-shipping company and can confirm that they don’t care about how they handle the packages.
Played basketball with packages labeled (with big red WARNING tape) radio-transmitting parts.
Its all about the speed there… the faster you work, the sooner you get to go home.

  10. whens the review going up ?

  11. I think many wants to know how it copes with 1080p from a PC ?

  12. I’ve heard it copes it bad, buit it ware jusr rumors…
    so waiting for review too

  13. I couldn’t wait for the review any more and just purchased the LX508D and all I can say is WOW! I have compared it rigorously side by side with the 52″ x3500 and this set kicks the x3500 ass by far, when we toned down the lights it was no contest. The Blu-ray picture on this set (if properly calibrated) is hands down the absolute best HD picture I have seen! Lets see if hdtvtest.co.uk agrees with me…

  14. I was thinking this was a very rare horror story – until I got my 42″ pz70 delivered by courier yesterday. Guess what? whacking great crack in the screen. At least the replacement I’ve been promised is coming via a proper tv delivery company, so it should arrive in one piece.

It’s a good job I read this a few weeks ago & remembered to sign for it ‘unchecked’
