Pioneer PDP-508XD Review

Pioneer PDP508XD

I’ve completed the review on Pioneer PDP508XD, the current flagship model of the G8 Kuro series of plasma TVs. The set was generously supplied by TLC Broadcast, an authorised Pioneer specialist dealer. If you’re thinking about giving this review a skip because you’ve read the one on PDP4280XD, don’t: there are a couple of subtle but significant differences in terms of picture quality.

We also have a new contributor on board here at HDTVTest – David Mackenzie (more well-known as Lyris on the forums). He remains the chief hardware reviewer for DVDTimes, but will contribute some reviews to HDTVTest from time to time. Since first corresponding with him over the clouding issue on Sony W2000, I’ve discovered that David and I both share a deep commitment to in-depth and accurate reviews beyond what normal home theatre magazines usually offer (which is pretty obvious from his writings at DVDTimes). We both also harbour the same disdain for a certain HDTV review website that has plagiarised his PS3 review (among others), although he’s fanatic about Ren & Stimpy cartoons and I can’t claim to have seen many episodes. :)

He’s currently reviewing the Panasonic TX32LXD700 for HDTVTest, and I look forward to what he has to say about this television. Welcome aboard David!

  1. Hi,
Thanks for detailed review I’m planning to go for 428XD (not 4280) for two reasons size of my living room (viewing distance of 7-5 feet) and budget but you mentioned that “Different screen sizes may also require separate circuitries to drive the respective panels.”

I was wondering if I can have the better shadow detail than 4280

    Cheers

  2. Ah, ‘Lyris’! Good to see him on board! Look forward to further high quality reviews! :)

  3. Hi.

fantastic review. However I’m still struggling a bit with the choice of screen for our living room. The choices are pioneer pdp-4280xd or the reviewd pdp-5080xd and the panasonic TH-50PZ750 (TH-50PZ700). Today most of our viewing are films and TV at around 7-10 feet distance. We have alot of DVD’s so The screen have to give a good picture on this material, and TV (SD analog swedish braodcast signal). But as we are very fond of movies I am planing this autum to invest in a blue-ray player (to upgrade most of our films), the samsung bd-1200 or the panasonic DMP-DP10A, which has gotten alot of good reviews, and does a good job scaling up regular dvd’s to 1080p, and has no deinterlacing problem etc…

My question is , is there any point in going for the 1080p plasma (50″) or is the pioneer sufficient. Most blue-ray movies are 1080p but as we have alot of dvd still, does the pana give a poorer picture for that material, given the pana blue-ray players scaling capacity ?.

Is there any plan for a review of the panasonic 1080p plasma in the near future. I would think that there is some competition between them, and that many people (me included) would want to see a comparison.

(i saw one shorter review at hdguru, however i think the ones here are far superior)

    thanks for a remarkable homepage
    /sincerely/

  4. Wow, that’s great. There are three reviewers on this site now.
    Welcome David. :)

  5. Hi – Thanks for the best, most comprahensive UK TV reviews!

One thing – I’d love to learn more about the greyscale and chromaticity graphs you post… They look very pretty, but I have no idea how to interpret them! Is there a FAQ somewhere?

p.s. I’m considering the Samsung P76 63″ panel – is there a review on the horizon?

  6. Thanks for the nice review. Would be awesome to read how the Panasonic TH-50PZ700 compares to the Pioneer…

  7. Hi Vincent, when is the review of the Panasonic TX-32LXD700 gonna be published??? It would be interesting to see the HDTVtest review, given your stingent testing methodology, as this set won the 32″ LCD TV Supertest in the current issue of WHAT HI*FI?, just beating the Sony KDL-32D3000 & Philips 32PFL9632D. It will also be interesting to see how the set compares to its baby brother, the Panasonic TX-32LXD70, in terms of picture quality and black level as they apparently use the same IPS alpha panel. Looking forward to the review! Keep up the good work chaps! Best wishes!

  8. seeing that you tested the ps3 with the PDP-508XD was wondering if you could do the same with the PDP-4280. Im avid movie and game lover and would like to know more about how the plamsma handles game consoles like the ps3 and perhaps if your up to it the xbox360 as well. Thanks for your time and Im loving your reviews!

  9. Dying to read your review on the new PIONEER PDP-LX508D (full Hd).
