Owners of Samsung’s 2017 televisions who subscribe to the Amazon Prime Video streaming service will be getting an early Christmas present, as news comes from South Korea that the two technology giants will finally roll out content containing HDR10 Plus dynamic metadata technology this month.
According to Samsung Korea’s online newsroom, HDR10+ video content will go live through the Amazon Prime Video app on Samsung’s 2017 QLED and UHD TVs from tomorrow (13th of December). It’s unclear which territories will receive the update in the first wave.
Samsung and Amazon first announced the partnership to bring HDR10 Plus content to viewers back in April earlier this year, and if the launch goes smoothly as planned, it will be the first HDR10+ content that will be available for public consumption in the industry.
HDR10 Plus is an open standard dynamic metadata technology that’s backed by Samsung and most recently 20th Century Fox and Panasonic in an IFA announcement, which aims to provide a royalty-free alternative to Dolby Vision’s proprietary system. In theory, dynamic metadata delivers a superior HDR picture to static metadata through the provision of extra information on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame level.
Titles on Amazon that will receive the HDR10+ upgrade include “The Grand Tour“, “The Tick” and “The Man in The High Castle“, with more than 100 affiliated contents on the way as Samsung and Amazon strive to expand their HDR10 Plus library.
