A video gamer has reported a bizarre issue affecting their LG C1 OLED TV, saying that every time they fire the main Requiem gun when playing Resident Evil 9: Requiem, it forces the TV to restart.
The strange occurrence was reported by redditor u/yorgo332 on the r/LGOLED subreddit, together with video evidence of the problem he’s facing.
It’s a great example of truly immersive gaming, but this issue should not be happening. The LG C1 OLED TV is one of the company’s most iconic models, rated as one of the best that money could buy when it made its debut five years ago in 2021. While the OLED panel technology and processor is now looking a little dated, it’s still considered to be a very capable TV.
The issue could have something to do with the TV’s power supply. The Requiem gun in Resident Evil 9 is a big and extremely powerful Magnum-style revolver, and it emits an extremely bright flash from its muzzle when it’s fired, along with a booming “bang” sound effect – but this should not break the actual TV the game is being played on.
Opinions from redditors and experts were mixed. Most comments suggest that it’s likely an issue with power, and some speculate that the TV is unable to handle the electricity surge required for the sudden bright flash. But alternatively, others suggest it could be some bug in the TV’s processing that gets triggered when the weapon is fired.
One user even suggested that it might be caused by an audio issue and the loud sound the gun creates, while another recommended that the user adjust the brightness to try and resolve the problem.
Finally, one redditor said the player ought to disable HDR or reduce it, and the OP responded that he did, and that it appears to have fixed the issue. The person who recommended that fix then speculated that the player’s HDMI cable might be the issue, although they conceded it could also be because of inadequate power being supplied to the TV. They suggested plugging the telly directly into the wall socket, instead of using a power strip, and trying again with HDR switched back on, but it’s not clear if that helped.

The most likely cause is indeed power supply. Some redditors reported experiencing similar issues in the past when playing games that featured sudden bright white flashes. However, ggmania said its “tech experts” suspect some kind of hardware limitation regarding the way the TV handles peak luminance.
Although the post has blown up on a Reddit forum that’s often monitored by LG’s support staff, the company has not commented on the issue or what might be causing it.
The LG C-series family of OLED TVs will be refreshed once again this year with the upcoming LG C6, which promises to be a significant upgrade for anyone looking to replace the C1 model. It has a superior, brighter panel for one thing, and LG has also taken steps to deal with native 10-bit gradation, where it has historically struggled with visible posterisation and colour striping, especially in near-black scenes.
LG has promised to deal with this through its new Alpha 11 AI Processor Gen 3, which enables more efficient power consumption. It has also introduced a 12-bit colour pipeline that significantly increases the level of gradation per channel, and 13-bit Luma processing, which doubles brightness resolution to aid in resolving highlight details and prevent posterisation in bright HDR content.
