Samsung is one HDTV manufacturer dedicated to the organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV as shown by the fact that they produce more OLED televisions and mobile screens than any other company. Their aim is to dominate this market by 2012, and to achieve this Samsung Mobile Display will have an entire factory in Cheonan dedicated only to OLED TVs. Until now OLED technology has been very expensive, but with the prospect of these OLED televisions being mass produced the cost should come down.

Taking the first step in the challenge to bring the price down, Samsung has invested in a new 5.5 generation (5.5G) line of OLED panels which will start being mass produced in the first quarter of 2011. This will include a 42-inch OLED HDTV which should be ready for distribution in 2011. It is possible that their first 42-inch OLED televisions will be on display at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January.
OLED TV will most likely be the next big thing in the television industry. The vibrant display is one of the most energy efficient available today and requires very little electricity. It also has fewer parts than LCDs which cuts costs because a backlight or colour filter is not needed.
Anecdotal reports of smaller OLED displays have been very positive, and many people are looking forward to the 42-inch version given that OLED screens offer fast response, are lighter and thinner, are self-emissive and deliver vivid colours. Should the Samsung 42″ OLED television make it to store shelves by 2011 as scheduled, it will definitely be warmly embraced by consumers and enthusiasts alike provided that the price is not overly prohibitive.
