Samsung PS50Q97HDX Plasma TV

Flower Show HD

The Samsung PS50Q97HDX review has been completed and uploaded.

If you are a Sammy Q97 owner who has experienced the two problems we described in our review (“reflection moire” and motion-adaptive tearing/ juddering), and resolved them convincingly through settings adjustment on your Q97, could you please let us know how you achieved it? We will still have the plasma for the next couple of days, and would like to try new things (we’ve tried most) to see if they help.

In the meantime, Samsung has been made aware of these issues. Hopefully it’s something as simple as a service menu setting or a firmware fix.

Don’t let this put you off though… just read the full review. :)

  1. Hi Vincent, great in-depth review. But I feel i’m left behind with a piece of kryptonite:
On one side I think it is powerful and value for money, but on the other hand I’m struggling with the comparison to the Panasonics. Especially the moire to the negative and the banding(dithering) to the positive. Kryptonite is a strange substance isn’t it ?.

Anyway …. do you thing the 42″ versions are drawn from the same material ?

    Cheers,
    Ron

  2. Another great review guys. I have one question though:
Panasonic PX70 seems to have a 100 Hz refresh rate option in the menu while the Q96/97 seems to work only at 50/60 Hz. Is there any noticeable flicker compared to the Panny?

  3. Thank you for the review, Vincent.

I have not notice reflection moire effect on my Samsung PS42Q91HX (German version). This may be because of either screen size, 18 bit color processing, or being a German version. But I will look at it carefully at different ambient lighting conditions.

We would like you to post the setting values after calibration. Thanks again.

  4. @Ron: Although I haven’t tested one, there’s no reason to believe that Samsung employs radically different panels and technology on the PS42Q97HDX.

@Yannis: The Panasonic 42PX70 we reviewed did not have the 100Hz refresh option… we UK consumers are used to being shortchanged. With that in mind, the Samsung PS50Q97HDX exhibited less flicker compared to the 42PX70 probably due to their “Smart Frame Plus” technology.

@Vehbi: If you don’t see it, don’t go looking for it. :)

  5. Thanks for the review.

I’ve seen DNie demo on PS42Q91H and I couldn’t see any enhancement differance between DNie on and off. There is some difference but it is hard to say one is better than the other. Is this because it is not a powerfull engine or that I have too amateur eyes??

  6. Hello Vincent,

I´d like to ask you, if the Samsung PS50Q97HD is able to display 576i signal, which is led through the HDMI cabel? Samsung says, that this plazma is able to display just 575p, 720p and 1080i signal through HDMI, but I want to watch the 576i signal led through HDMI from my HDTV satellite receiver too.

    Sorry for my bad english,

thank you very much for your answer,

    Pavel

  7. Hi,

Just wondering, I saw ps50q92h in shop here (Serbia). Is this same TV as ps50q97h, but just different number for different country. Would be very grateful if someone could give me an answer.

  8. @Aleksandar; yes, it’s the same screen. In Europe the Q91/Q92 are the equivalent of the UK Q96/Q97 models.

  9. Btw, about the reflection moiré. The cheaper C models don’t have the “problem”, i saw a Q and C next to each other and the C was “clean”.

  10. @Levent: Maybe when DNIe was off, the TV was still in “Dynamic mode”, hence your inability to tell the difference.

@Pavel: No, the PS50Q97 cannot accept 576i (and 480i for that matter) through HDMI.

@Apple740: I haven’t seen a PS50C96HDX myself, but what you said further reinforces the theory that the moire stem from Ultra Filterbright (the C96 uses Filterbright only).

  11. Yep, Samsung should drop the ultra filterbright and should
use the normal filterbright in the Q series too.

  12. I really like this site and its test, nice work!

I have a question though, why do you mostly test 3:2 pulldown detection? Since this is a UK-site I would love to see much more bias towards 2:2 pulldown detection. I mean, thats whats important when sending DTV movie-sources to the display (from external or internal DTV-tuner).

  13. Hi Test Crew!

How about closing the possibility to comment to these reviews here -> Open a new thread for any new review to the Forum instead?

Would give some life to your forum and keep everyones comments on one place… :)

  14. So whats the difference between the Q96 and Q97 model?

  15. GREAT REVIEWS VINCENT

Iam from Australia and I think you have a GREAT Web site

Iam thinking of buying the PS42Q91HDX

have you heard from samsung yet regarding this problem

reflection moire” and motion-adaptive tearing/ juddering

    Thanks VINCENT

  16. SORRY VINCENT. I forget to ask you
were can I get all the Best tweaking settings
    for the samsung PS42Q91HDX

I would assume they would be the same as the

Samsung PS50Q97HDX That you have just Reviewed

Thanks again hope you can help

  17. I got the PS7HD 42″ tv, but this review was very helpful indeed in the sense of the quality of the image.

I must say that the reflection moire does not be of any annoyance while looking at the TV, but when the TV is turned OFF it is visible though.

It is a great TV, the one I got -and this reviewed is surely just as good, or even better.

But the thing is that I like soccer, and the problem the q97 has is something I also am having.

When to ball gets high in the air, infront of the crowd, the ball can for a short while be splitted in 2 balls, one that follows just after the first one, but that is only at that moment as it does that.

The “Dynamic Contrast” which on my model were choosed as standard, was very annoying, every frame adjusted itself to show the best white/black levels, but that lead to a small gentle flickering of the brightness/darkness, gentle but yet visual and annoying -so it was best turned off.

I hope you will find the television really great, because it is great looking and has great qualities!!

  18. I think, for some reason, they do not want to post calibrated settings. But, it is interesting that they posted them for the previous displays.

  20. Hey I hear the Panasonic TH42px70A is a real awesome TV, what are your thooughts

  21. It’s a load of crap, for an excellent buy around the same price, consider the Samsung PS42Q91HDX – awesome dude!!

  22. My top buy is the Centrex 42″ plasma, top buy just a crappy plastic case.

  23. ARGH!!! i’m so confused about what to do!, im looking for a decent, good value plasma or lcd tv, and i really like the look of the samsung ‘Q range’ and the C96, im really into technology and such, but when it comes to this im an amateur, just wondered whether i should go for this, or if you know/ think there would be a better one, cause im not really sure what the differences are between this and the C96, so if you have any suggestions or know any comparison sites then it would be appreciated, thanks!!!

  24. This isnt the only samsung TV that appears to have this problem at the moment, have a look at this link and it looks like the new samsung LCDs are having the same problem.

  25. Has anyone got the optimum settings for C96?

  26. Giuseppe Stramandinoli

    Dear Vincent

greetings from Melbourne, Australia. I recently (March 08)bought a Samsung plasma PS42Q91HD and it suffers from what you describe as motion-adaptive tearing and judder when I’m watching football and especially Australian rules (as the ball is kicked in the air a lot more often than in football). It is particularly noticeable when watching Foxtel Sports (cable tv), which is not a digital broadcast. On a couple of occasions the ball has completely disappeared in flight!

I was wondering if you had heard from Samsung about how to rectify the problem. I’ve been in contact with Samsung Australia and so far they have made a couple of suggestions which haven’t been very helpful (turning the sharpness down to 10 and turning off Movie Plus).

    Many thanks

    best wishes

    Giuseppe Stramandinoli
