Samsung's flat-screen QD-OLED G6 and G8 launch in EU and US

Fans of Samsung Electronics’ QD-OLED monitors have more options available with the launch of the company’s new 27-inch Samsung G6 and 32-inch G8, which are available to buy in Europe, North America and other markets now.

While the new QD-OLED monitors are still primarily designed for gaming, they are the first the company has offered that come with a traditional flat-screen design, as opposed to the curved display format that was previously standard with all QD-OLED monitors.

We saw the new monitors for the first time at CES 2024 in January, and they are finally coming to market now, with the third-generation of Samsung’s much-vaunted QD-OLED display technology.

Among the new features with the third-generation tech are higher resolution and faster frame rates.

The new models, officially known as the Samsung G6OSD and G80SD, are launching ahead of the Samsung G9 or G90SD monitor, which is the company’s flagship monitor this year and is slated for launch in the coming months. The “D” in the series names denotes that these models are the company’s 2024 QD-OLED monitors.

The Samsung G6 is a 27-inch QD-OLED monitor that features a 2560x1440 resolution and a blazing-fast 360Hz refresh rate, while the 32-inch Samsung G8 is a 4K model with a slightly slower but still very fast 240Hz panel.

The G8, with its 4K resolution and flat panel design could make it an ideal platform for professionals looking to perform graphics and video editing tasks, but they should note that it’s still cursed with QD-OLED’s peculiar triangle-shaped pixels that can result in colour fringing around text and other objects. However, Samsung claims it has made significant progress in reducing these artifacts with the third-gen QD-OLED tech. That said, early looks at the monitor suggest that the effect is still noticeable, so that may put off some video editing professionals.

This is likely to be the reason why both the G6 and G8 are both designed primarily for gaming, with their blazing-fast response times helping to eliminate any possible trace of blur or judder in fast-paced games. The monitors come with HDMI 2.1 ports, DisplayPort 1.4, VRR support and true HDR capabilities, which are not present on Samsung’s LCD-based Odyssey Neo monitors. In addition, the G8 runs Samsung’s more advanced NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, which also features in the company’s 8K TV model this year. Both monitors have Samsung’s unique anti-glare coating, which debuted on its 2024 QD-OLED TVs.

The Samsung G6 and G8 will go head to head with some of this year’s flagship WOLED monitors from companies like LG Electronics, which is notably advancing to a 480Hz panel in its flagship offering this year. Its premium monitors are also available in flat-screen 27-inch and 32-inch flavors.

Other features of note include the Tizen OS, which means the monitors can also play video streaming content from Netflix et al, as well as Samsung’s Core Lighting+ feature, which is similar to Philips’ Ambilight tech.
