Samsung starts rolling out support for Google Cast on its TVs

Google LLC has long since killed off the Chromecast dongle, but the technology used by those devices lives on in the shape of Google Cast, and now it’s coming to a host of Samsung Electronics TVs that were launched in 2024, 2025 and hopefully 2023 as well.

Android Authority was the first to report this development, confirming that Cast functionality will be added in an upcoming One UI Tizen software update.

What this means is that Samsung TVs will no longer be restricted to using Samsung’s own Smart View technology, which enables smartphones to beam content to the big screen. The unfortunate thing about Smart View is that it only works with Samsung phones, so if you happen to have another type of Android device, you were out of luck.

Google Cast is an extremely useful technology that has become one of the most common ways for streaming content from a smartphone or tablet device to televisions. It’s similar to the AirPlay 2 technology on Apple’s iPhones, and is a very convenient way to access more content on the big screen.

Samsung had previously said its 2026 TVs will be getting support for Google Cast, including its upcoming flagship model the Samsung S95H, but it has now decided that some older models can get it, too.

It hasn’t been made clear which older models will get the update, but multiple Reddit users have confirmed they have received the capability on a variety of older Samsung TVs already. For instance, this user said that their Samsung S90D television from 2024 has gotten Cast capabilities following a software update. But it may be a while before Samsung completes the rollout, so not all TVs that are destined to get Cast may see it yet.

We expect that all of Samsung’s OLED TVs dating back to 2023 will get Cast, along with most of its Neo QLED models from that period. The firmware update and Cast technology is extremely lightweight and simple, so it’s likely that it won’t cause any issues in terms of the TVs’ hardware capabilities.

FlatpanelsHD confirmed that the update to keep an eye out for is One UI Tizen v2115, but curiously it only said it’s coming to TVs from 2024 and later, unlike Android Authority, which said some 2023 TVs will get the update too.

Google Cast is supported natively in the Google TV platform that’s used by companies such as TCL and Sony, as well as LG Electronics’ webOS software. So any TVs using those platforms should already support the functionality. Samsung’s TVs have long been a bit of an oddity in not supporting it, and so we’re glad to see that changing.

If you happen to have a television that still doesn’t support Cast, you can invest in a Google TV Streamer, which is the successor to the Chromecast dongle that plugs into any TV with a HDMI connection. Other dongles and set-top boxes, such as the Xiaomi TV Stick HD (2nd Gen) and Mecool MEon1 4K GTV Streaming Box, also support Cast.
