There is good news for customers of media and entertainment giant British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) who are also fans of Formula 1 – the digital satellite television company has revealed that early next year it will be bringing out a dedicated Formula One HD channel which will focus on the provision of in-depth, high-definition F1 coverage that will get viewers as close to the action as possible.

BSkyB launches dedicated Sky Sports F1 HD channel

The new Sky Sports F1 HD channel is set to launch in March of next year, which will give Formula 1 enthusiasts a unique and memorable viewing experience that will take them into the heart of the action, and provide them with comprehensive coverage that will include expert analysis and information on top of the high-octane live sports action.

Viewers will be able to enjoy the Sky Sports F1 HD channel on HDTV displays, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, as well as online throughout the Formula One season, and will be able to look forward to live coverage of the whole Grand Prix season. This will include practice and qualifying sessions, making this channel a must for any F1 fans who do not want to miss out on the action.

Sky TV subscribers who have access to both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2, or the HD pack of channels, will not have to pay any extra for the dedicated F1 channel. Those who have not subscribed to the Sky+HD package will receive a standard-definition version of the new channel.

Sky Sports’ managing director Barney Francis said that the broadcaster wants to give its Formula 1 viewers a unique viewing experience, as many are “hungry for more”. He added that this channel will prove a hit amongst F1 fans not only because it provides such indepth coverage, but also because it is a channel that is entirely devoted to the sport.

  1. Sky should have a dedicated Badminton channel, as the sport is hardly seen on TV.

  2. I bet you can’t pay just to watch F1 on sky , you will have to subscribe to ALL Sky sports channels to get it. Lots of choice but on their conditions

  3. I agree with Mr. Barnett; and after that, I cann’t wait for the “Watching paint dry Channel” !

  4. just cancelled my sky tv as i dont think its worth the money, so thats the end of my F1.

  5. What is it Michael Winner says…. ” calm down ! ”
BBC WILL have ALL races next year BUT ONLY 10 WILL be LIVE!
Those that are NOT live, will have a primetime slot.
Like it used to be 20 odd years ago.
Anyone who has Sky will have the ability to see it without costing a fortune too.
    :)

  6. Slightly annoyed that BBC are not covering every race live, but im sure that Sky will do a great job broadcasting F1, i hope!

  7. Thanks god for SKy – its awesome that we will be able to see F1 in HD now… Fingers corssed they might even try to do one in 3D too!

  8. I believe that the way it will work is BBC have half of the races live, which you will get the same coverage as this year. and they will pull in 7 mil viewers.

The other half they will have Highlights only

Sky – will have all races live and struggle to pull in more than a mil on any race, charging 26£ a month to watch that and football or if were really lucky they will charge like they do for ESPN and will be 10£ a month..

I my opinion though i don’t see how they are going to make the coverage that much more in depth, detailed or live than what the BBC currently offer, ( i am willing to eat my word if they pull it off)… and i dont think it will be worth the extra cash.. Sky is expensive enough as it is.

If Mr Branson is clever he will re brand his Cars Virgin Media Racing Next season to splatter it all over Skys coverage :)

  9. If you people would like to discuss this futher on any other aspect of HDTV, please join us over on the new look dedicated HDTVTest Forum.

    Barry.

  10. That car in the picture is an A1GP car, not an F1 car, lol.

  11. Please note, F1 is already on BBC HD so wont be any change there. I doubt Sky will be able to match BBC’s already excellent program, and based on the number of viewer’s they will get – they wont have the budget to.

  12. @ jon
that would be brilliant if Richard Branson re branded as Virgin media racing but alas virgin racing ceased at the end of this season and will now be be known as Marussia F1 next season

  13. @ Katie
It was in HD this year, on the BBC’s HD channel. Sky are not the first one’s to be showing it in HD, perhaps they will be for 3D though.

  14. just lost another customer not paying £10 a mouth to watch something on the bbc for nothing.works out at £10 a race as 11 will be shown on the bbc
