Sony KDL32D3000 Arrived

Sony KDL-32D3000

And the first 4 pages of the Sony KDL32D3000 review is now up. The rest (calibration & picture quality) should be ready by this weekend.

Long shot this, but maybe, just maybe, we can collect enough money to buy a PS3 to test its gaming and 1080/24p compatibility…

  1. This is the review alot of us have been waiting for. But…we all want to know how it handles 1080p/24! Better get these guys a PS3. I’m off to donate something…

  2. Well i have already donated (a small amount)but i have the following question:

Why don’t you guys, take a PS3 from the same electric companies that offer u the tv sets? Or noone of your close social cycle can’t lend u one for 1-2 days a ps3.

Anyway, your doing a great job!!! we need u.

  3. What about HTPC running 24Hz? As far as I know it is perfectly possible to set 24 Hz refresh rate on almost every graphic card if display supports it of course. With 1:1 mapping it can give spectacular effects from bluray and hddvd, and even reencoded movies which in majority are 24fps.

  4. @Georgiadis M: Thanks for your donation. We buy the HDTV sets ourselves, we don’t get it for free from the electric companies. And no, none of our friends has a PS3… and even if they do, the PS3 for which we’re raising the fund is to be used to test all the HDTVs we’re going to review in the future, rather than just a once-off.

@Piotr: A HTPC is powerful, but not representative of 1080/24p compatibility. For example, the Samsung M86/87 can accept 24Hz signal from a HTPC but still can’t display 1080/24p from a PS3 due to firmware-related EDID misinformation.

And it’s just not a graphics card, to watch Blu-ray or HD DVD on your HTPC you will also need to buy the appropriate BD or HD-DVD drive and playback software… this is too much of a hassle for the average public and I’m sure more people watch high definition stuff through a PS3 than via a HTPC.

For what it’s worth, because HTPCs are so configurable in terms of hardware and software, there are simply too many variations which prevent us from drawing any meaningful conclusion. What I can do with my HTPC does not mean that you can do the same thing with yours… if only because the graphics card and drivers are different.

  5. Does it mean that M86’s edid info doesn’t contain 1080p24 as supported mode and you have to force it in PowerStrip?

True HTPSs are so flexible and configurable that it is hard to get it properly configured. But all of this is up to software. Think that both xbox360 and ps3 are basically PCs with dedicated software and hardware.

  6. Vincent,

You should (always) at least check/test tv’s ability do 1:1 pixel mapping with PC via DVI/HDMI connection.

If your current ATI Radeon 9600 card is so bad, that you can not do it, then I suggest that you would buy some basic graphics card with proper DVI or HDMI connection (example NVIDIA GF 8500GT).

  7. Great review lads and finally a site where I know the reviews are completely unbiased as you guys have to fork out for the products yourselves.

Will you be reviewing the Panasonic TX-32LXD700 anytime soon just wandering how it will compare with the KDL32D3000.

  9. I have PS3 +1.5m HDMI+32D3000. Doing display autosetting PS3 choose highest [x]1080p resolution. But for some reason I get a snowing effect on top of the ps3 XMB or game screen. Casino Royale bluray playbacks fine through 1080/24 signal.

Specs do say it should support 1080p input signal. But I had to do manual setting and disable []1080p and let [x]1080i as a highest display format. I wonder if this is some PS3 or D3K firmware bug or just a feature.

  10. Hey Vincent, great review keep up the good work! I have a question that id really appreciate your help with, having had a couple of lcd tv’s i have noticed that viewing angle is something im particularly sensitive to. When viewing The sony bravia [20 inch screen] i have in my kitchen as soon as you move out of a very narrow band say between -20 degrees and +20 degrees i can notice colour fading across the whole screen, just the same as i can with my lcd pc monitor. So im planning to buy the sony kdl d32000, reviewed here, but i want to know what happens to the picture quality as you move out of the direct sweet spot. I realise that this tv claims to have a @178 degree viewing angle but i get the feeling they mean just that = it can be viewed! but not that the picture quality is totally consistent throughout the range of viewing angles. I understand S-PVA screens give the best performance on this score – should i hold out till sony decide to make the 32 inch screen S-PVA [my living room is to small for a 40inch screen]. Would really appreciate your perspectives. Cheers!

  11. I have just bought this TV. I was thinking of using it as a monitor for a PC as well as for TV. Is the quality good enough for using with the PC, or should i just use it for TV? What is the best way of connecting to a PC? Thanks.
