Just when we thought that QD-OLED had restaked its claim for the fastest-ever monitor refresh rate, LG Display has stepped up its game with its WOLED technology.
One of its partners, ViewSonic, has teased the imminent launch of a new WOLED monitor featuring a 520Hz refresh rate, and it could be available to buy shortly after the CES 2025 show takes place next month.
LG Display previously supplied the WOLED panel for ViewSonic’s 480Hz XG272-2K gaming monitor, which was launched in April 2024, but if that wasn’t fast enough, gamers will soon have a superior option to look forward to.
ViewSonic teased its upcoming 520Hz OLED monitor on Monday, though it declined to provide any details, such as the model name or any photos. It didn’t specifically mention it’s using a WOLED either, but it said the new monitor will support Dual Mode technology, which is a feature that’s exclusive to LG Display’s OLED displays..
The gaming news website IGN said ViewSonic’s new display will offer 4K resolution, with the 520Hz mode likely to run at 1080p in Dual Mode, which enables seamless switching between resolutions and refresh rates, though that may depend on the aspect ratio of the panel. It will also support AMD FreeSync Premium, which minimises screen tearing and motion blur.
ViewSonic didn’t say anything about a release date, and no pricing details were mentioned either.
The prospect of a 520Hz monitor is clearly aimed at gamers wanting to enjoy blazing-fast gameplay without any glitches, and ViewSonic has a lot of pedigree in this department, not only with its monitors but also projectors. The company has launched a pair of projectors designed specifically for use with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, beaming 4K resolution onto a 100-inch screen with refresh rates of 120Hz at 1440p resolution.
Assuming LG Display does launch a 520Hz WOLED panel, that will mean it retains its lead against Samsung Display, which last month was reported to be planning to launch a 500Hz QD-OLED panel for gaming monitors.
While Samsung Display hasn’t yet confirmed its plans, ETNews revealed that the 500Hz QD-OLED panel will be a 27-inch display featuring 2560x1440 resolution. It’s said that the panel is in the final stages of development, and is expected to be shipped to a number of top monitor brands early next year.
None of these rumors are yet confirmed, but we do expect that they will be soon, with both LG Display and Samsung Display set to make a flurry of announcements next month at CES 2025.
