You can now buy a 3:2 aspect ratio monitor that rotates vertically

Monitors with a 3:2 resolution and plenty of vertical real estate are quite rare things these days, and ones that can rotate to be viewed vertically are even rarer – but they do exist. JapanNext’s new 282IPS4KP-HSP monitor is one such example.

It’s a relatively affordable monitor despite being rather unusual, and its specifications suggest it’s aimed more at office users than gamers, who usually prefer a wider-screen format.

The 282IPS4KP-HSP is a 28.2-inch 3:2 aspect ratio monitor with a resolution of 3840 x 2560, and it also features a pair of functional 3-watt speakers. It uses an IPS LCD panel, which is the reason for its wide 178-degree viewing angles, and it also boasts 100% coverage of the sRGB colour gamut and 95% coverage of the DCI-P3. The company didn’t list its refresh rate, which means it’s unlikely to be very fast.

As JapanNext points out, the big advantage is that it's 1.18-times larger than an a regular 4K display, making it more efficiet in terms of screen real estate.

There’s also a height-adjustable stand, which should aid in comfort, but the really unusual feature is that the monitor is able to rotate vertically, similar to a tablet or a smartphone. When it does this, it essentially transforms itself into an elongated 27-inch 16:9 display.

We’re not sure why it has that feature, given its intended audience of office workers and people working with spreadsheets and things at home, but it’s there nonetheless. It should at least be useful for those who intend to use it as a multi-purpose display and browse social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram videos when they’re not using it for work. In that case, they’ll be able to scroll through endless videos in all their vertical glory.

On the input side, you’ll find a pair of HDMI 2.0 ports and dual DisplayPort 1.4 connectors. The stand also supports tilt, pivot and swivel adjustments.

For now, the JapanNext 282IPS4KP-HSP monitor can only be purchased in Japan, where it’s priced at 40,980 Yen (around £195). The company hasn’t said if it intends to launch it in the U.K. or not, but in case it doesn’t and you really need a 3:2 aspect ratio monitor, there are a few alternatives, such as the BenQ RD280U, which can be found on Amazon priced at £499.

But in case you really need a vertically-rotating 3:2 monitor, those are pretty rare things. You’re probably limited to this model, which means you’re going to have to find a way to ship it from Japan yourself.
