Sharp LC32RD2E Review

Sharp Aquos LC32RD2E

Here’s our Sharp LC32RD2E review. At last a worthy contender for the Panasonic TX32LXD70. With 100 Hz tech packaged in a Sharp Aquos ASV panel capable of 4ms response time and a whopping 10,000 CR, it’s bound to rattle some nerves and excite some viewers. And best thing yet, it even looks the part with its stylish exterior.

If you are wondering where in the world is Vincent & Colin, we’ve been busy with some web development stuff that might lead us on a new path. Everything should be back to normal pretty soon. Stay tuned.

  1. Excellent review as always. Slightly confused by a couple of things. Are the 100hz and Trud modes seperate or combined? Can you have one without the other? I couldn’t quite make out which should be used for SD and HD. What exactly is it that spoils 24fps (HD-DVD/Bluray) material?

Also there’s some ambiguity as to whether the dynamic contrast is any good. You usually steer us away from dynamic contrast (for good reason) but sometimes it’s not clear in the review which mode the contrast you’re referring to is set at.

    Cheers

  2. Tru D is combined with 100Hz technology. So you CAN’T have one without the other. Use TruD on all video material (SD or HD). The 100Hz TruD creates an `fast forward’ effect, that looks weird on films. Everyone seems to be moving a little bit faster.

As far as I remember, dynamic options are in OPC (optimum picture control – changes backlighting/dynamic contrast) and Dynamic range under HDMI setup. I switched OPC off from the remote (inside compartment) and left dynamic range to normal.

  3. Thanks Colin. Interesting that you didn’t report any negative side effects with movies and 100hz on the Panny LXD70. Is it then some other functions of Tru D that are causing the ‘fast forward’ issue?

How’s the motion blur when watching material in SD/HD without Tru D enabled?

Also to be honest I’m not sure what you mean by ‘video’ material. Most TV (drama, wildlife etc.) is shot on film or HD nowadays isn’t it? Would I have to disable Tru D when watching a DVD of Prison Break for example?

Lots of questions I know but it’s a toss up between this set, the Samsung 32M86 (100hz) and the forthcoming Sony 32D3000 and I’m keen to make the right choice!

  4. The Panasonic LXD70 has some fast forward artifact but I recall that it wasn’t as bad as the Sharp. I can’t explain it though; just reporting what I see.

The motion is above average with TRU D off, but is miles better when its on (for video material that is).

Yes TV dramas and movies fall in the film category. Videos tend to be for live events and all that.

    Good luck.

  5. I’m in the same situation as Jake, I doubt between theses LCDs:

    Sharp LC32RD2E
    Sony 32D3000
    Panasonic 32LXD700
    Samsung 32M86

I’m waiting for the 32D3000 review, then I’ll make a decision.

Thank you for your revies, they are very useful!!

  6. I’m also waiting to buy either the Sony 32′ D3000 or Panasonic 32LXD700.

Interesting some people say the PQ on the Panny 700 is better than the 70, which is interesting because when I tested the Panny 70 the picture was very good but average blacks. If the 700 had deep blacks it would be a sure winner.

I’m banking on the Sony to deliever. Just waiting for a review on this site, which I must say is brillant. So informative, well written plus at the same time easy to understand.

Could you review HDMI cables? Especially QED SR or IXOS XHT458.

Keep up the excellent work, thanks.

  7. Hi,
Very good review, but I have few questions/remarques:
    1. On full spec you stated that Response time is … 450cd/m2. I read that this panel has 4ms, is it true?
    2. Can this TV accept 1080p like Panny?
    3. Do you experience banding or buzzing?
I really like Panny (for me it’s best 32″) but 32″ it’s small for HD. Hope 42″ Sharp has the same quality..
    Thank you

  8. Thanks for spotting that.

I don’t have industrial equipment to measure the real response time but subjectively, our motion test looked slightly better than normal LCDs with 8ms response time. The Double Frame Drive cuts the motion blurring to an even greater degree.

We don’t have a 1080p player right now, but with our HTPC we managed to output 1080p resolution via HDMI (not 1:1 of course). We have had some problems with PC graphics card compatibility, and so I don’t think you should take this as gospel.

Watch out for the 40 inch Sony. It’s a winner.

  9. Hi,

Thanks for the review. Have just purchased the Sharp LC32RD2E and am interested to know what settings you used for test.

Would be greatly appreciated – I understand that the usual caveats apply?

    cheers,

    Paul.

  10. Thanks for the review! I recently bought this tv and i’m very satisfied..

Only one problem, with the 100hz mode on I can’t really play games like PES6 on the Xbox360 because there’s some sort of ghosting, when I turn the 100hz mode off it all runs smoothly..

I’m also interested to know what settings you guys used :-)

  11. Nice review!
I have the 37″RD2E model and i’m also interested about the settings you used ;)

  12. Hi,

I also want to add that anyone expecting to use the TV with XBOX 360 via the DPIN adapter (as discussed in the review) will initially be disappointed. The supplied adapter will leave you with vision but no sound. That’s because EXT4 where the VGA interface resides, does not contain any phono sockets for the audio – only a 3.5mm jack.

You will need to purchase an additional ‘3.5 to 2 phono’ adapter. I got mine from B & Q for £3.50, although I also know that Maplins definitely have them.

Colin – Still interested in test settings if you get the chance.

    thanks,

    Paul.

  13. I have this LC-32RD2E set. It is a great tv, my only complaint is that when watching football, it sometimes looks like the football has morphed into a flying saucer shape. Is this a 4ms / 100hz / truD problem?
