Sony expands its lineup of Crystal LED video walls with CAPRI

Sony is set to showcase its latest commercial video wall technology for filmmakers, called the new Crystal LED CAPRI display, at the InfoComm 2025 event in Orlando, Florida on June 11-13 next week.

The new Crystal LED CAPRI boasts a maximum brightness of 1,500 candelas per square meter “cd/m2) and a 2.5 millimetre LED pitch size, enabling it to display much brighter pictures with a wider colour gamut and higher refresh rates than its existing displays. It also boasts enhanced anti-reflective capabilities, with superior installation flexibility and streamlined maintenance, plus compatibility with Sony’s ecosystem of virtual production tools.

According to Sony, the Crystal LED CAPRI is targeted at filmmakers seeking a cost-effective tool for projects including TV shows, feature films, commercials, broadcasts, rentals and staging, with two models available. They include the Sony ZRD-VS25FB and ZRD-VS25FM, which are compatible with Brompton and Megapixel controllers, respectively.

The Crystal LED CAPRI LED displays are meant to complement Sony’s premium Crystal LED VERONA display products. Compatible with the same controllers, they also match the luminance of the VERONA displays, enabling them to be used together in a single LED wall, the company stated.

Sony Professional Display Solutions Vice President Rick Ventura said the CAPRI furthers the company’s commitment to the development of “spatial content” and virtual productions, enabling filmmakers to showcase almost any kind of image backdrop in high fidelity.

“We’ve broadened our lineup to offer more cost-conscious choices, which expand the market in support of high-quality virtual production at every level and ensure the growth of Sony’s distinctive virtual production ecosystem,” Ventura said.

Sony’s Crystal LED CAPRI is quite a capable display, even if it is being marketed as more "affordable" than its VERONA products, with its 1,500 cd/m2 brightness paired with high refresh rates of up to 7,680Hz, ensuring superbly bright images and fluid fast motion. It covers 98% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut to accurately reproduce almost any kind of image.

The lifelike qualities of its images are further enhanced by its anti-reflective features, which help to mitigate problems with studio lighting equipment, Sony said.

As another advantage, Sony is promising a streamlined setup experience, taking advantage of recent advances in installation techniques, such as locating pins and tool-free lever locks. It offers a 1:1 cabinet that’s optimised for temporary installations including virtual production stages, so it can be rapidly dismantled and re-assembled at different locations.

The Sony Crystal LED CAPRI also allows for module blocks to be changed from the rear, with status indicator lights to identify any blocks that require servicing. The company said it expects to start shipping the CAPRI before the end of the year.
