Sony may launch a new OLED TV this year after all

Sony disappointed many of its fans when it declined to announce any new OLED TVs this year, focusing instead on its upcoming “True RGB” models that feature RGB LED backlights during its big launch event last month. However, relief could be on the way, with signs of a new Bravia 6 OLED model in the works.

The rumoured Sony OLED TV will be a more affordable model that’s set to be launched in a range of sizes, from 48-inches all the way up to 83-inches, and it will come with four HDMI 2.1 ports.

Sony has said it plans to continue selling last year’s Bravia 8 II television featuring a QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display in 2026, rather than announce any new high-end OLED TVs. This year’s premium Sony TVs include the Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II, with both featuring True RGB displays. The announcement raised concerns that the company might be stepping back from OLED, especially in light of its plans to merge its TV operations with TCL from next year.

Fortunately, it looks like Sony is still committed to OLED to a degree. Details of the upcoming Bravia 6 TV range were first spotted by AVS Forum user 845008460, who discovered that the models have been listed in multiple databases online in different countries.

Sony’s own website also reveals that the Bravia 6 TV will be compatible with a specific type of wall mount bracket.

It will not be a flagship TV by any means. The Bravia 6 name suggests it will be a more affordable model than the current Bravia 8 II, which competes with Samsung’s S90 series and LG’s C-series TVs, sitting just one step below the flagship Bravia 9 II. AVS Forum users believe the Bravia 6 could well use LG Display’s new OLED SE panel, which is a lower-cost display found on the LG Electronics B-series OLED televisions, although that is unconfirmed.

We’ve seen leaks like this before from Sony. For instance, details of this year’s Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II TVs were both spotted in databases back in August of last year, nine months before they were officially announced. That suggests it may be some time before the Bravia 6 TVs are launched. Of course, there is still a chance that Sony may cancel the TV altogether.

We’re hopeful that it will indeed launch, even if we have to wait until next year. Unlike the Bravia 9 II flagship, which only has two HDMI 2.1 ports, the Bravia 6 listing suggests that it will be powered by MediaTek’s Pentonic 800 chip and come with the full complement of four ports that silicon is able to support.

Because the listing specifies it will be available in 48-, 55-, 65-, 77- and 83-inch sizes, that seems to confirm it will use a WOLED panel rather than QD-OLED. That’s also fitting with Sony’s style, as the company generally reserves QD-OLED for its higher-end OLED TVs.

Just remember that none of this has been confirmed, and with Sony set to marry its TV business with TCL from next year, it’s very possible that the company’s plans could change, so for now, this can only be treated as a rumour.

If you do have your heart set on buying a Sony TV this year, you may not want to discount its new True RGB TVs. Although HDTVTest hasn't yet been able to review one, our chief reviewer Vincent Teoh's first impressions suggest that they are going to be very compelling televisions in their own right:
