Huawei debuts massive new "Super Mini-LED" TV

Huawei has just announced a new flagship “Super Mini-LED TV” and it is an absolute monster that looks poised to offer some of the best new RGB-LED TVs a run for their money, with its massive screen, eye-searing brightness and top-notch processing capabilities.

It’s called the Huawei Smart Screen Mate TV Max, and it’s on presale in China now. It builds on the launch of Huawei’s Mate TV and Mate TV Pro Mini-LED models that launched in September, with sizes ranging from 65-inches to 98-inches.

The Mate TV Max is even bigger, with a single 110-inch size available that boasts a native 4K resolution panel with 120Hz refresh rates. Perhaps, the panel could have been a bit faster, but that’s just about the only real let down, for the Mate TV Max excels in almost every other area, most especially brightness, where it pumps out an impressive 6,000 nits, combined with precise lighting controls to enhance image quality. It also has a 2,300:1 contrast ratio and 125% coverage of the DCI-P3 and 91% coverage of the BT.2020 colour spaces.

Huawei said the Mate TV Max is its first TV to come with a “flagship mobile phone-grade” processor that delivers an improved performance of 490% multi-core and 251% GPU efficiency to support various AI features found in the HarmonyOS platform. It also has an independent image quality chip that packs in 3.6 billion transistors to enable AI-powered “4K super resolution” and other AI HDR special effects.

Like all premium TVs these days, it looks the part with its super-slim 1.2 millimetre bezel, with Huawei claiming a 99% screen-to-body ratio. There’s a sleek, touchpad-style remote that supports AI gesture controls, and it also has 33% superior pointing accuracy compared to the remotes that come with the original Huawei Mate and Mate Pro TVs.

There are no compromises in terms of audio, with Huawei saying the Mate TV Max delivers 3.1.2-channel surround sound via a pair of 20-watt upward firing drivers that are combined with a hefty 60-watt subwoofer, plus a “suspended woofer with 39Hz bass”. In terms of connectivity, you’ll find four HDMI 2.1 ports, plus USB 2.0 and S/PDIF for connecting an external audio system.

The Huawei Smart Screen Mate TV Max is available to preorder in China now, where it costs 64,999 RMB (around ₤6,929), which is not really so expensive when you consider the price of most other monster-sized TVs. For instance, Samsung is asking for around £25,000 for its new 115-inch Micro RGB TV, while Hisense’s 116UX RGB Mini-LED TV is similarly priced.

The question is whether or not the Huawei Mate TV Max will be released in the U.S. or Europe or any other region for that matter. While the company sells its smartphones virtually everywhere, many of its earlier TV offerings were focused on its home market.
