BBC Sport App Arrives On 2012 Samsung Smart TVs

Timing its arrival right in the midst of this year’s summer of sports, the BBC Sport app has been launched this week on the latest Samsung Smart TV models. The Korean manufacturer is the latest in a line (following Panasonic, Sony and Virgin Media) to add the application to its connected platform.

Owners of Samsung’s 2012 range of internet-connected HDTV displays will be able to use the BBC Sport app – which is accessible through the Smart Hub portal – to enjoy the Beeb’s interactive coverage of some of the most significant sporting events taking place in the UK this year, including the Wimbledon tennis championships, the British Grand Prix F1 race, and of course the London 2012 Olympics.

The app will provide alternative ways for viewers to follow Wimbledon, ranging from multi-match coverage and audio commentary options to statistics and highlight footage. Formula 1 fans will be able to watch all the practice and qualifying sessions of the British Grand Prix, as well as access additional interactive features like on-board cameras and a “driver tracker” which pinpoints the location of each car on the circuit. As for the Olympic Games, coverage of a maximum of 24 sporting events simultaneously amounting to 2,500 hours worth of content will be delivered by the BBC Sport application.

Samsung UK and Ireland’s vice president of consumer electronics Robert King said that the company is pleased to be able to offer a wide variety of sports content to its Smart TV customers. He added that the BBC Sport app will help users keep abreast of the most recent sporting action worldwide, regardless of whether they are tennis or Formula One enthusiasts, or just sports fans in general.

With the BBC Sport app joining the other major on-demand offering from the public service broadcaster (BBC iPlayer) on Samsung’s Smart Hub web-connected platform, the brand’s smart televisions now boast a growing portfolio of apps dedicated to sports, such as the recently released Football app and Red Bull TV.

  1. I have 2011 samsung tv. Is the BBQ sport app going to be on this model sometime soon?

  2. Samsung may roll out the app for 2011 models before the London 2012 Olympic Games, but it’s not definite.

    Warmest regards
    Vincent

  3. We bought a Samsung 40″ 3D HDTV in January 2011 and had to wait ages for it to come into stock (ordered in December). It seems a bit of a swizz that people like us don’t have access to the new BBC Sports application whilst those buying new TVs do, especially as it can obviously be rolled out anytime Samsung chooses (or does not as the case may be). Please be fair and make it available for anyone with an internet-connected Samsung TV.

  4. I dont seem to be able to get this BBC Sports app. I am living in the republic of ireland and i am wondering if it will be made available here?

    regards

  5. Just bought a TX-P42ST50B, and have this app. Disappointingly, there doesn’t seem to be an option to specify HD content where possible, whereas I’ve found such an option in the iPlayer app. Anyone know whether this option is available? I’m watching Valencia GP highlights now and the quality is quite poor. Will be a shame if this is the quality I’m to expect from the Olympics highlights as well.

    Thanks

  6. I have downloaded the new BBC Sports app onto my new Samsung ES8000 TV and although it loads to start with I’m afraid that I have not succesfully dowloaded a video. It says that the “content is unavailable and try again later”. Not much use!

  7. To Don and anyone else having issues with “Content Unavailable” errors on BBC Sport or BBC iPlayer saying content Timeout.

If you’ve got the latest version of the firmware, the latest version of the Smart Hub app – you need to have also updated the Web Browser app (not obvious – and not an app I had ever opened).

It’s a dependency for the other two – once updated, the other apps will work fine.

  8. Just got the Samsung es8000 . And cannot seem to find the redbull app, is it up and running as not happy : (

  9. Thanks Ed for your comments. I have the most up to date firmware and versions but when clicking onto any video in the app I get the message that “content is unavailable please try later.

Am I the only person having this issue? Can I remove the App from my Samsung TV once downloaded?

    Any help appreciated

  10. I have a UE40D6530 purchased in February of this year and I to do not yet have the BBC Sports app, or the Demand 5 app which was advertised some time ago by Samsung. How long will I have to wait for the ITV Player that was apparently released this week. To my knowledge the Smart Hub Portal is updated regularly so there should be no difference to the 2011 and 2012 versions. Other apps come down quite often, why not these?

  11. whats the point of the app for the 2011 teles if its rolled out AFTER the olympics!
    VERS DISSAPPIONTING

  12. I bought my Samsung smart TV in August 2011 and am annoyed to find that I cannot have the BBC Sports app. My enjoyment of the Olympics was very much curtailed by not having this. I have been buying Samsung now for a number of years but my loyalty is being severely tested.

  13. i bought a samsung tv so i could watch the olympics at my leasure using BBC sports app it does’nt work why is nothing being done about it i also spent an hour and 15mins on the phone to the help line what a waste of my time & my money

  14. Attached below is the response from Samsung to my query as to whether they would make the BBC Sports App available on their Smart TVs prior to 2012 (mine is Aug 2011)

    ‘Thank you for contacting Samsung.

I am sorry that you are unable to receive the Sports App, and I appreciate the frustration this can cause.

Unfortunately, we currently have no plans to make this App available on any other model of TV. However, this may change at a future stage.

I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. ‘

Very disappointing customer service and I feel very let down.
The answer is simple – if Samsung won’t support their products just 12 months old with up to date apps, then don’t buy Samsung!

  15. What shocking Customer Care/Service from Samsung. I bought, what I thought was an up to date model back in December 2011, only to discover that there are Apps I can’t get. Samsung need to get their act together.
