Samsung PS51D6900 3D Plasma TV Review

Two of Samsung’s Plasma televisions actually arrived for review with us here at HDTVTest together. We decided to work our way up from the cheapest to most expensive, so, after reviewing (and being highly impressed by) the bargain-priced Samsung PS51D550 last month, we’ve spent some time with the step-up model, the PS51D6900. Going by specs alone, the D6900 seems to add an ultra-slim design, Smart TV apps functionality, and “Anti Reflection” screen coating. There’s also a 10-point greyscale calibration option and colour management system, for those of us who will be calibrating the TV for the highest quality of picture accuracy. And unlike other Samsung HD ready TV sets, the 51D6900 features a full high-def 1920 x 1080 native screen resolution. The price for these features is an extra £150 (approximately) at the time of writing, so, let’s see if the Samsung PS51D6900 is worth the step up over the D550!

Design

For some people, we think the Samsung PS51D6900 will sell itself based on its design alone. Like the D550 model, the PS51D6900 features a very slim bezel which frames the large Full HD Plasma panel. As a step-up display, the 51D6900 goes a step further and adds a beautiful brushed steel finish to the bezel, which is, in turn, framed by transparent glass-like acrylic. The plasma TV is wonderfully thin – almost as thin as the company’s LED LCD TVs to the eye – although this thinness appears to have been achieved without any compromise to picture performance.

The HDTV sits on a stand which is slightly shiny (the stand supplied with our review sample was black), and also features a brushed steel effect. Overall, we could hardly be any happier with the appearance of the Samsung PS51D6900 given its price point.

Connections

No surprises here… the Samsung PS51D6900 features – you guessed it – 4 HDMI inputs, provision for SCART and Component analogue interfaces, an aerial feed for the Freeview HD tuner, and a LAN socket for connecting the TV to a network (although we imagine that this will go largely unused, since the PS51D6900 features built-in wireless connectivity).

Operation

The Samsung PS51D6900 features the Korean manufacturer’s 2011 menu system, and the implementation on this model responds quickly to user input, which is always one of our main concerns. Although it’s not the company’s top-end plasma HDTV, it features the full gamut of picture setup controls, from the essential Brightness, Contrast and Sharpness adjustments, all the way up to 10-point Greyscale calibration and colour management screens.

  1. This model is by far the best possible purchase in this price range. It just offers a wonderful picture quality, great features and a stunning design – all that for a low price. Mine just came in yesterday, and i am thrilled with it.

    Anyway, keep up the good work, i am reading your reviews for a couple of years now. Big greetings from Belgrade, Serbia.

  2. I agree with Gizmo, good job :)

  3. i am disappointed that you only give a brief mention on the brightness pops issue did you not test for this watching normal tv channels with sport or brightly lit scenes when the camera pans across?

    also i commented on when you reviewed the d550 and i mentioned on how to test for the issue but it seems you have not done so, like i say i am disappointed because pretty much every professional review dont really mention the issue which leads me to believe that the issue will be in samsung plasmas next year.

  4. The brightness pops have just become a thing ofthe past with the 1019 Firmware that was released this week. They are gone. Well done Samsung. This is a brilliant TV and is only bettered by the 59″ version.

  5. Thanks for the fantastic review. I was trying to decide between this and the 51 inch D8000 which is about £400-500 dearer. This set feels like it offers more value without compromising a lot on picture quality for regular viewing. My only remaining concern is a generic one on this TV’s SD performance (BBC/ITV etc from a sky box) as our current viewing distance is about 10 feet. In your opinion, is this too close especially since most of our viewing is SD except for BLU-ray ?Thanks.

  6. Hi.

    Thanks for the test. My only question: Has the SD quality been improved with any of the firmware updates?

    Thanks in advance. :)

  7. Hi.

    Do you note differences in video processing among this and D8000 with SD? I thought this TV and D800 have the same processor.

    Thanks.

  8. Thanks for the feedback, everyone :)

    @Raz:
    I don’t think you’ll be too unhappy at the quality of SD.

    @Ellyson:
    Maybe someone else can tell us. If the past is anything to go by, it should stay the same.

    @Gamen:
    The D8000 featured Samsung’s nonlinear scaling so looked slightly better with SD. However, it failed the SD PAL film mode (2-2) test.

  9. I’m really unsure about whether to buy this television or spend a little more on a VT30.

    As far as I understand from this review, the picture quality difference between the VT30 and this Samsung is not that extreme, although the Panasonic has a better black, right?

    But the SD thing really concers me. I still watch quite a lot of digital satelite television. :/

  10. Hi David,

    A lot of users complained about buzzing- did you experience something like this?

    Thanks.

  11. PLEASE could you reply to this just to let me know your thoughts on this tvs 3d capabilities (crosstalk etc) compared to the Sony KDL40HX723? I do have this PS51D6900 and opted for plasma for my 3d gaming on PS3 after reading so many good things about plasmas better handling of 3d compared to LCD/LED and although im happy with its crosstalk amounts (your correct about dark high contrast scenes, its still present, alot in some cases) i am however unable to get used to the frame doubling motion judder on 30fps games that all plasmas suffer from (ive learnt) whilst gaming.

    Ive therefore opted for the Sony KDL40HX723 after reading very good reviews where its dealing with crosstalk is concerned but im just hoping you could let me know your thoughts. If your a gamer or are knowledgeable about gaming on plasma, am i getting an inferior tv in the HX723 all because of the frame doubling / motion judder problem? Should i just stick it out and try and get used to it because the 3d will be so much better than the Sony KDL40HX723?

    Or are the 3d capabilities similar and itll be a good swap? Size difference isnt a concern, 40” is more than big enough for my shoebox of a gaming room. Its just the 3d and 3d gaming that im worried about. Im worried this D6900 will get picked up and ill get an inferior 3dtv.

    ANY thoughts or input will be GREATLY appreciated.

    btw, the GREATEST tv review website on the net, FACT!

  12. For 2D and 3D callibration setiings you used HDMI Black Level Low or Normal? I ask because you don’t post this setting for Samsung plasmas and Samsung changes this with every new firmware. Thank you.

  13. for my 6900 hdmi normal is always 0-255 and low is 16-235 on 3 different firmwares but I hear something about this problem

    KDL40HX723 is only good, not more but 6900 is very good and I recommend it for you

  14. Thanks Frank but I asked something different. I already have a Samsung PS51D6900. Excellent tv, but has very bad motion with 576i SD TV channels and with 30fps games on PS3, a lot of motion judder.
    Also I think D6900 has a better housing than D550 plasma because it has vents in the superior side which dissipate heat easily.
    I can really see the better input lag in HDMI 1/DVI than in Game Mode on other HDMI inputs in FPS games online.
    For me,image retention is not a problem with gaming.
    The elimination of Motion Judder Canceller was a stupid decision from Samsung, as long as you could turn if off or on.

    @David Mackenzie: For 2D and 3D callibration setiings you used HDMI Black Level Low or Normal?
    David, I suppose you used Warm 2 setting too, yes?

  15. calibration settings please ;)

  16. David, I’m confused. Having a better price for something like the Panasonic TX-P50ST30B are either of the last reviewed Samsung 51″ plasmas a better choice? Thanks for a reply,

  17. Hi David, smashing review on this Samsung Plasma.

    Just a couple of questions for you:

    How would this compare with a Panasonic G20 for 2D picture quality – would it be better or worse in your opinion??

    Also not really bothered about the “Smart TV” features as I have a media player and a PC about 10 feet away from my set-up so how does the Samsung PS51D550 stack up against this tv and the G20 … it is £300 cheaper but I am guessing it does not perform too far behind this higher model??

    Any thoughts??

  18. Hi.

    The scaling qualities of this TV were rated as “poor”. Does that mean I should not buy it if I watch a lot of digital satelite TV? Should I rather buy a Panasonic?

  19. Hello David, great review as always! When will you post the calibration settings for this fantastic plasma tv? Thanks!

  20. facebook.com/hdtvtest -> settings

    i have 3 question about it :
    – color temperature is warm 2 or warm1?
    – film mode for SD&HD turn off or auto1/2 ?
    – hdmi black level normal or low ?

  21. Many thanks David for your excellent review. You definitively convince me to purchase the 59 inch panel.
    Is it possible to have your pictures settings ? It should be fine !
    Good job !
    Definitively the best plasma panel in this price range ;)

  22. Hi,

    could possibly have a look at the balck level after an update to FW1019?

    Over on avforums.com some people are reporting worse blacks after the upgrade.

    Thanks

  23. With the new firmware brightness pops are gone but now we have the same floating blacks as Panasonic had 2010 instead.

  24. The Sammy 6900 has it’s own dedicated thread over on the new look HDTVtest forum, you can talk about this great tv over there or anything else for that matter. Just click the Forum button at the top of this page.
